They would be easily stapled back on, if I had retained them. Tossed the bubbles, kept the cards themselves. I even put the stack of them in an archival storage bag :). There was a dangerous amount of residual lead dust in those blisters and on the foam padding.

Sorry 'bout that. I realize opening them was far worse for their value than driving a new car off the lot, but I couldn't really even see them (at least not the detail) in the packs, especially the ones needing assembly. At least this way I know what a parn, a herp, a cal thens, and some of the other obscure creatures that went unillustrated in the rulebook look like. I have a decent imagination, but it helps when prompted by someone else's depiction..

Miniatures were meant to be opened, assembled, and used (or at least displayed). You can't really appreciate how cool some minis are unless you can hold one or look at one that is out of the box. This is especially true in the case of these particular GW minis.

Saving the cards was a good idea, of course.

I give Sigma two thumbs up for assembling and priming his collection. PDT_Armataz_01_34  PDT_Armataz_01_34

Me too. I think that is a great call on his part. Toys are meant to played with, Comics are meant to be read, Birds are meant to sing, Fish are meant to fly, etc...

Thanks; I think I made the right call too. I'll enjoy them much more now that I can view them. I'll probably keep several out on the shelf at one time, and change them out once in a while. I'll still need to store most of them, most of the time--there are oodles of them, and they take up a lot of space.

Don't worry, I won't try to paint them. I agree with whoever it was who said that a bad paint job (the only kind I'm capable of :)) is worse than no paint job. The primer is to protect the kids' brain tissue (I'm a lost cause), and it seems to make the details pop, also, which is cool.

EDIT: Now to begin my quest for the remainder of the blister packs (21 I don't have) and the 2nd box set. Should only take me twenty or thirty years...

Make sure you prime the bottom of the minis too.  It's easy to forget that's a surface with lead on it too.  8)

When I had an overwhelming number of minis to paint, I shipped them off the Acaeum member Egg of Coot.  He's very reasonable, trustworthy and capable.  He painted at least three large lots for me, and I was always pleased.   :)

A bold move, Sigma!

I agree that they belong out of their packs and where people can enjoy them.  As a comic book collector, I feel the same about comics.  Those CGC graded ("slabbed") comics make me crazy.  What's the point of a book that is sealed shut? That's the reason I quit collecting; I stopped enjoying them for comics and only saw the amount of money each one was worth.

I must admit, I wouldn't have primed the minis, but I can certainly understand your concern with lead and children.  I am extremely careful to keep my daughter away from my minis.

Thanks for sharing the images.  My only complaint is I can't see them well enough! They are all blended together in those pics.  Any chance you'll take some more pics?  Maybe each picture with only one packs worth?

The Yexil is very nice.  Nice to see the assembled Blight as well (cannot see the lower portion tho).

I am really fascinated by the bear that was in the Brotherhood of Thought pack (G-11).  I can see him, but not real well.  Did that pack also come with a raccoon?  I can't see one, but I seem to remember reading there was a raccoon in that pack.

Anyway, 'grats on the find, and well done opening them.  They are worth more this way IMHO.

I have to say I largely agree. The primary value of a book resides in the information it contains. Collectors tend to forget that the items they collect have a use aside from the thrill of the hunt and acquisition (I don't think it's so much the monetary value sometimes, as the satisfaction of being able to afford the expense). I tend to get duplicates of all of the RPG stuff and SF&F books I collect, so I can read one copy and preserve the other, but if I were only able to have one of each book I'd sure as heck read it.

I must admit, I wouldn't have primed the minis, but I can certainly understand your concern with lead and children.  I am extremely careful to keep my daughter away from my minis.

With two small boys, someone's bound to touch a mini and then their face sometime. No real choice.

I'll take some more photos at some point, but I'm about to be indisposed (surgery) for about a month, so that'll have to wait.

The damn Blight came with two right wings, can you believe it?! I glued them both on anyway, you can hardly tell. If I only had a time machine, I could complain to the manufacturer...

The bear is the raccoon (there are two). In other words, no bear, just raccoons. They're kinda fat for raccoons, though :).

I think these look great (kind of like b&w vs color photos). I have some old minis, most given to me by a friend about 25 years ago. Some are nicely painted by his older cousin, some are badly painted by myself (I don't think I knew about priming) and some are unpainted. I haven't been sure what to do with them. The idea of just priming them never occurred to me. I have no experience with painting minis other the few attempts 25 years ago. What is the primer that you used?

If you want a simple way to add some depth to them, try hitting them with a wash. The new Citadel washes work great, and would surely make their details pop. Use Devlan Mud for brown, or Badab Black for black.

Nothing fancy, but it sure beats straight up primer.

Thanks! I'm really happy with them. I've had a couple of old Gamma World rulebooks for years, but hadn't so much as cracked them open until a month or so ago, and now I'm a maniac; I wish I had taken the opportunity to play the game back in my heavy gaming days in the eighties. I think I like it even better than D&D, and it's nice to have some visual representation of the creatures (the illos in the rulebook are few and far between).

Hadn't thought about it that way (b&w v. color), but I like the way you think (plus I have no choice at the moment, so why not make a virtue out of necessity :)?). I'm chomping at the bit to acquire a couple of the other figs from this line, especially the "bots". The pics I've seen of the Attack/Defense 'Borg and Engineering Bot look super cool--lots of tentacles and whatnot (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/?title=Gamma_World).

I have no experience either, except for botching one or two AD&D mini paint jobs in the early '80s. I used "P3", which I gather is put out by Privateer Press (the Iron Kingdoms people?). Took 2 1/2 spray cans to get them all done.

Thanks for the idea, but I don't want to mess with these any more than I absolutely have to. I wanted them out of the package and assembled so I could see them, and felt I needed to prime them to lessen the possibility of lead rot and keep the kids safe. Beyond that, I want to keep them as pristine as possible, and tinkering with washes just seems like a recipe for heartbreak. While a truly professional paint job would be ideal, with my current means (I've spent enough on them already) and talent/knowledge (virtually nonexistent), for the time being I'm going to settle for keeping them the way they are. The pictures don't really show how much detail the primer alone has brought out.

I've got a few nice cases w/ foam on the way, so I'll be keeping the majority stored safely, with a few out on display. I also plan to fully document which minis came from which blisters (and also the contents of the Adventurers boxed set, primed also but not pictured) and keep a record, so no one has to guess about anything in the future.

Eventually, I might spring for propainting of a few of them. The Yexil, Menarl, and a couple others are particular favorites of mine, but I don't have the ready cash at the moment.

I have a Battlefoam case myself and love it.  However, foam does have one sneaky problem, and that is that the foam can scrape off the paint, primer, whatever over time with movement/transportation.  If you are mostly keeping the case still and for storage, no problem at all.  Otherwise, tiny plastic zip-lock style jewelry bags are a good option.  They are also very cheap and can be purchased on eBay.   8)

As I am sitting on about 180 blisters of blue-card Ral Partha Battletech minis, I find your decision to open and prime ... interesting.

Did any of the minis have rot starting to show?  I've got all mine in a tub with about 2lbs of the crystal they pack with electronics to prevent it and all still look very clean.

I don't plan to resell them, but like having the option of busting an Unseen Assault lance if I feel like it to paint them.  However, the reality of me getting around to that dictates that I don't want them to disentegrate in the interm.

Does anyone know if the "Ralliduim" stuff is subject to the same issues?

I did buy up a bunch of Star Frontiers ships and open them (about 5 boxes worth of Sathar ships), which I am totally glad I did since they had the start of the rot (some are a little pitted but will fill in with Green Stuff easy enough since they are not super detailed).

I'll have to claim the opposite position of Jason - I'd much prefer to get the stuff I have thats "of value" slabbed.  I can always buy a second copy to read.  Shrug.

Rallidium is pewter or a lead-free pewter blend, so no need to worry about lead rot on any minis made from that.

Ralladium is more brittle as a result, so re-posing Rallidium minis or straightening the bent bits makes frightening noises:
