Actually, I think a lot of the interview directly and indirectly refer to the Acaeum and issues discussed here:

When I changed the look of the Dungeon Crawl Classics brand, I was surprised at the intensity of the reaction. A number of the grognards seemed to take it as a personal betrayal. I am still honored and astounded at how attached they became to the original DCC look. There were many good reasons for changing the DCC look, most importantly that retailers needed a clear differentiation from the 3E DCC modules on their shelves and the 4E DCC modules on their shelves.

The interview is very good, with Joe getting an expanded format to discuss some of the issues he brought up online a few months earlier. Very informative.

I never felt betrayed about the style change.....just disappointed. The old school artwork and format was what drew me to the DCC line in the first place. I get why he changed the look though...it made sense from a business standpoint. And it still doesnt change my opinion of the adventures and I still buy them even if I dont play 4E.

Yeah, "betrayed" is a bit dramatic. I'd go more with "skeptical" and "completely disinterested" as my first two choices, followed maybe by "spending my money elsewhere." But I certainly never felt betrayed.

Well, I felt betrayed.

I said at the time that Goodman was jettisoning its customer base by switching the feel of the product.

Turns out, that's exactly what they did - Goodman just said so quite clearly.

Since his sales of 4th Edition are OK, he probably made the right decision.

If Goodman is making money on 4th Edition, that is good news for both the industry and for gamers.

I was impacted by Joe's take on missing the initial 3E boom, and wanting to capitalize on 'first mover advantage' with 4E... I think that vision was evident from a while back, and they've been on track.

I found the reference to sales to those who didn't play interesting... was that a comment on 'collectors', or did I miss something?

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

I think he was talking about not only collectors but those gamers who will purchase a new rule set just to see what's been done. Some of these gamers turn into the "XYZ is ruined because they changed blah blah blah" but some buy it just to put on the shelf "just in case".

All in all I thought it was a good interview and it did help clarify his position from his post on the forums.

I thought it was a good article. We don't get too many industry people really sharing their views and business direction. I wish Joe would publish the RPG history book - or share the numbers, etc.

I liked the comment about "or things like Dave Trampier's real location.". I'm guessing that means he offered Tramp the chance to do some covers?
