Definately musty. I got a bunch from him. My schnozz doesn't work, but I noted some apparent water damage to a couple. Asked a friend to do a sniff test, and they were absolutely musty. Haven't noticed any mold internally, but a film of some type on the outside covers. Might be dirt, maybe not. They are awfully scuffed, but pretty clean internally.

I have an air purifier which seems to be doing a good job of taking the odor out, and the covers should clean up pretty well.

Probably why he now states odors. Contacted him on that.

If he is saying this is the common 'old book' smell, then that is mold. The problem with mold is that if you smell it the spores are there even if you can't see them. Mold spores are pervasive especially in paper products. Getting rid of them or even killing them is very difficult without also damaging the paper.

Yep; as predicted given the timing and that the seller came across in a negative manner and somewhat condescending in the auction listing towards various interested parties, so other bids didn't get placed.
I'd tried to place a $950 marker right at the start (US shipping addy), fwiw.

At least the set didn't get thrown out, anyhow.

Actually stated as "I am only shipping to addresses in the United States"; which was the case here, fwiw.

The "I apologize in advance to my international customers--but the risk of loss/damage and potential for outrageous customs and duties fees is just too great" yadda, yadda got my back up, too, since that's saying people are ignorant of customs fees (there are none for books/printed matter into the UK, anyhow) and refuse to accept personal responsibility for any such, and that they didn't trust /any/ form of registered/insured post outwith the US (pirates off the coast and raiders on the borders, or something?).
Wasn't wanting any apology, just to ship as was stated in the auction if my bid was the highest at the end...

Their call, anyhow: and a bargain for the winner (:)) since it really was /lousy/ timing to be selling, too.

Message received, loud and clear. I apologize for any offense. My loss, with respect to international collectors. I agree that it is a generally poor time to be selling anything. Lesson learned.

Possibly even a third "win" if the highest bidder was someone who couldn't have "afforded" the set otherwise, rather than a reseller, so that still sounds like a positive outcome in general, IMHO.

No offense taken. I think most international collectors of higher priced items are very familiar with the customs charges they could incur. To Canada, chances are it would get hit with the 13% HST (I think that's what its called here now). The offsetting factor right now is that the USD not doing so great in comparison with foreign currencies - almost at par with Canadian dollars, etc which makes such things tempting for foreign bidders.

The Canadian dollar is apparently an aberration of late. Other currencies like the Australian dollar and Swiss Franc have been dropping against the USD. The Euro and, everyone connected with it seemingly, is tanking as well vs. the USD.

Not to say the USD is great, it's just that others are faring worse. It's a race to see who can hit the bottom first.

Good point. I was thinking that it wasn't a bad time to be buying things in the UK either.

If you're in Canada or the US, yes. From over here vs. the US$, say, purchases are around 40% more expensive than a couple of years back (without checking exact figures/dates): factored in, of course.

Seems all too true recently although I'm still not volunteering to go back to purchasing power/standards of living, etc., from 50 years ago.
