Because the word "pandemic" is just so darn fun to say, lol.  One of the colleges here in Indiana were having swine flu parties during the height of hysteria.  I'm pretty sure that the general population (who doesn't have a tinfoil lined basement) has given up on the excitement that was swine flu.  The media is just dealing with a boring news cycle in the only way it konws how...by screaming fire in a theater.

The regular flu usually stays in the nasal cavities.
The swine flu virus travels to the lungs and as far as the intestines allowing it to attack deeper into the body.

Well, I hope I am wrong, but I think swine flu is just getting started.  Two people I had a slight acquaintance with died from it this past week.  One was a 30 yr old woman, 2 months pregnant.  The other was a 60 yr old man who thought he had bronchitis.  I wash my hands madly and avoid crowds.  Take it seriously.  I like you people!

I hate to agree with you, but it's not uncommon for these things to come in waves from what I understand.  While the first wave was mild world-wide, the next one could be scary.  I also agree with predictions that the wave will hit the US with minimal impact.  The big damage will happen in the those nations with a poor nutrition, housing and medical treatments.

The bottom line for me is that the world is primed for a plague.  In 2005, the world population was 6.5 billion.  In 1900, it was only 1.6 billion.  In 1800, it was only 900 million.  In 1500, it was 500 million.  In 0 AD it was 200 million.
