Of course they don't care,  the policies the "decision makers" decide on, will sometimes make ebay money, sometimes not. But even if they make decisions that lose ebay millions, they will not lose one penny from there own paycheck. Beside by making "wrong decisions" insures these people people stay employed, because now they have to come up with a way to fix their mistakes. Hmmmm...it appears Ebay is getting a little nervous....these changes announced yesterday put a LOT of power back in the Seller's hands.  Honestly, I think this may turn out to be a genius move on Ebay's part....publically announce "No negative feedback for Buyers!" to get them back. Then, behind the back, basically make it possible for Sellers to have practically any negative feedback removed. Everyone's happy.

I highlighted a few passages I found amusing:

Feedback Protections
Also in January we committed to a plan that will restore the original intent of the Feedback system — to facilitate trust between buyers and sellers. Since announcing our plans, effective in May, it has become clear through conversations with many of you that eBay needs to do even more to protect sellers from dishonest buyers who use the Feedback system as a weapon. To make it perfectly clear, let me say that there is no place on eBay for anyone who abuses our community, flouts our marketplace policies and willfully harms other members.

As a result of our conversations with many of you, we are adding two Feedback policy changes to be rolled out in May to better protect sellers from this kind of behavior. First, while threatening to use negative Feedback to force an unfair deal is both extremely rare and grounds for permanent buyer suspension, we recognize it has happened in the past and will be tried in the future. If you experience this sort of behavior, please report this to eBay by using Contact Us from this page.

When we identify a pattern of abuse, or the evidence is clear from your report, we will remove the negative or neutral feedback — retroactively. But, we can't identify those patterns without your help and reporting. This is a call to action for every seller.

Second, we have listened to your thoughts on Unpaid Item (UPI) reports and our decision to remove negative or neutral Feedback from a buyer who fails to respond to a UPI. And what has become clear from our conversations is that we need to build in more flexibility for what happens when a buyer responds to a UPI report. What we have determined is that if the buyer does not specifically call out poor seller performance, item condition or transaction problems during the UPI process, eBay will remove the seller's negative or neutral feedback — retroactively.

I love the way they use "conversations" and "listened to thoughts"...right.  They heard the collective scream of a few million very pissed off Ebay Power Sellers......

Honestly, it increases the odds of listing again, I think. Speaking only for myself, I'm personally very satisfied with the time I've taken off and the success I've had at Amazon, but I'll give eBay credit for at least acknowledging that there is a problem (although, as Mike says, "conversations" is just marketing-speak for "Jesus Christ, we've really had our heads jammed up our rectal areas on this deal.")

Feedback should not be used as a weapon by either party in an eBay transaction ... if eBay can honestly show me a little bit of protection with this issue, I'll be more likely take the plunge again.

Anyone notice some changes recently to Ebay. Perhaps there was a grace period where you could continue to use a 'Classic' style interface?

It appears that there have been some recent changes that have gotten some of my favorite searches out of wack.

If they start showing you the "new" crappy test screen, go to the bottom of the page, there is a tiny link you can click that takes you back to the "classic" page.  The New page completely blows, btw.  The vaunted "Best Match" is default, and has nothing to do with whatever you put in the search engine. I tested the new setup last night, put in "pulp fiction" and got a bunch of Stephen King books.  What a load of Shite....

what the hell is happening with ebay. i mean, they are making some serious changes pretty much on the fly. its like the whole site has become a gigantic beta test.

if they add anything, it should be a checkbox which says "stop changing shit every time i log in"

It's what happens when you stock drops $20 a share in a year, and your stockholder base is getting antsy. Changes for the sake of changes.

The fees remain a huge issue, especially for shop sellers in the UK. Plus the deliberate attempt to mislead buyers on the star ratings so seller FVF discounts can be dampened down. But it's nice to see the elephant blink.

I hate to break it to you all, but this isn't really anything new. As a matter of fact the only difference that I see is this statement here:

"What we have determined is that if the buyer does not specifically call out poor seller performance, item condition or transaction problems during the UPI process, eBay will remove the seller's negative or neutral feedback — retroactively"

The fact remains though this still clearly leaves it in the disrection of Ebay as to whather or not a Neg should be removed which really isn't any different than it always has been.  Don't believe me just check some of the Negs that Cougar has had removed in the past seemingly with no reason at all.  I will also say that based on my very own previous experiences with Ebay, that leaving anything up to "thier discretion" and hoping for a positive outcome is just setting yourself up to be highly disappointed.

This really isn't anything different than it was before this policy before was just left unstated. Trust me when I say that.  This is just yet another attempt at Ebay trying to spin it like they are doing something different all whe while its nothing more than business is usual.

That's kind of what I was saying....despite all Ebay's announcements and bluster, basically things will stay the same. It's almost like the "No negative feedback for buyers" thing is just a wink and a nod at the seller, as they whisper "Don't worry, it's business as usual, we'll just remove those pesky negs if you bitch about it".  I think the announcement was just a publicity shill, and the Cougs of the world will be able to go on finding the loopholes to exploit, while the buyers THINK they now have the upper hand.

i think you missed my point. :)  My point is that its always been Ebays own discretion whether or not they will remove negs, this is nothing new.  The new part is them now acknoledging it publically in this particular context.  Based on thier discretion simply means that unless a buyer comes out and says if you don't do X or Y then I am going to neg you then they are not going to be removing shit. Same as it has always been.

Latest from on high
______

Offering PayPal as a payment method

Currently, PayPal is offered on about 95% of listings on eBay.co.uk. Starting in late April 2008, we will require all sellers on eBay.co.uk to offer PayPal on their listings.

Transactions made using PayPal result in significant reductions in fraud, and having every listing on the site offer a trackable, protected payment option will boost buyers' confidence so that they return to shop with you even more.

Sellers will continue to be able to offer other payment methods alongside PayPal, as per eBay's Accepted Payments Policy. Listings in the Motors Vehicles category will be exempt from this policy..

As an intermediary step, announced in January, we will require sellers to offer PayPal as a payment method in the following cases from 25th March 2008:

1. For all sellers who have a feedback score of less than 100 (regardless of feedback percentage)
2. For all sellers when listing an item in several specific categories

Wow.. forcing people to offer paypal.. thats a bit much... and what happens on ebay.uk will happen the rest of the places I think... anthough I belive that Australia may resist it, we have a law called in the finance sector called "third line forcing" that specifically says that you can't force people to use a third party product and this should fall under that..

Also I see that number of items of rpg items has fallen under that 7000 mark.. which seems to be down...

Brette:)

The irony is what slays me. Anyone who was around in the old days will remember how eBay barely tolerated PayPal when it was called X.com, then later went out of their way to bad-mouth PayPal at every opportunity for months on end, introduce restrictive rules on its use, and, finally, add its own uber-lame Billpoint option.

But, now ... well, now, PayPal is so effing awesome that it's becoming mandatory. It's practically good enough for a new dictionary definition of "irony."
