The problem is the hog lagoons. When animals are kept in massive quantity in a small space, their feces becomes concentrated too, producing some really noxious fumes. With the recent floods, all of it has been washed everywhere.

This was not a problem when a given number of animals were kept in open spaces, with enough ground to absorb it. You don't have to be a hippy to hate the sewer smell everywhere, believe me.

The problem with hog farms is not new. Here is a story from 1995 about a lagoon spill.

http://www.vivavegie.org/vvi/vva/vvstor ... fiasc.html

The worst hog-waste spill in North Carolina's history, in June of this year, sent 25 million gallons of soupy red hog manure gushing onto the state's roads, tobacco and soybean fields, and into the New River. A dike surrounding an eight-acre receptacle for hog waste at Oceanview Farms in Onslow County collapsed after a large rainfall, threatening fish life in the river as well as crops and area ground water.

  Cheescake IS good for you Mike - I am convinced  :D

As to organics, I was quite deliberately careful in choosing to phrase my praise for good food, as I know that the very world organic is a red rag to some people.  I compared "a free range bird that has run about and been fed well with a minimum of chemicals, to a cheap battery reared, antibiotic-pumped, fast-growth chicken" and "hydroponic factory-farmed vegetables and fresh local (often organic) produce".  Good quality, food often is organic, often it is not.  What I am against is the tasteless factory farmed food which is all over our supermarkets.

In London I am lucky enough to live next to a huge food market:

http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/
and believe me, high quality food really does taste better.  You may have to pay more (and there is a whole interesting discussion on the cost and availability of food - from Deadlord's point), but it is worth it.

Best of all though is, as you say, to grow your own veggies.  I draw the line at rearing my own birds though (hmmm, then again, maybe I could get a few on the roof...)

I would tend to agree in regards organic veggies, but if you can indulge me on one more point over free-range livestock-

Sauro, I don't disagree.  As a matter of fact, I have an aunt who is a lobbiest for the Texas Shrimp Industry.  I've learned everything I didn't want to know about shrimp farms (absolutely disgusting, shrimps basically living, breeding and eating in their own filth...to your table! MMMM) vs gulf shrimp, which are harvested and sold fresh.  There is a world of difference in how they are raised. But I'm just not convinced the definition of "free range" holds up to the mental picture many people have of a contented chicken running wild and free with his feathers blowing in the wind.  That's my only "beef" with the subject, that people are misled about what falls under the heading "free range".

And as for disgusting feces being washed everywhere, isn't the FDA pretty sure that's what cause the recent tomato salmonella poisoning that got them pulled off the grocery store shelves?

Al....I have a recipe that you would love....chopped brussel sprouts, sauteed in garlic, butter.....and yes, bacon.  Delicious!  I'll be sure to fix you up  a big, steamy batch when you make it to Texas sometime.... :D

Yeah, but there are always going to be overly-idealistic people. What you cited about it meaning as little as one hour outside a day seems to argue in favor of the practice. That is, if the meat can be improved by such a minor indulgence, then it should definitely be done.

This discussion reminds me of veggies in the 70s. I was too young to pay attention to vegetables at the time, but I remember adults complaining about how flavorless stuff like tomatoes had become. Apparently farmers were planting only the largest & most brightly color varieties, taste be damned.

Friend of the family back when I was a kid owned a vegetable farm.  Apparently got approached by a certain large fast-food chain who we shall call Raunchy Ron's ( ;) ) about supplying tomatoes.  They informed him that they didn't care how the tomatoes tasted, just that they be bright red and the right size to fit on a bun.

So, what happens at this board when you hit 1000 posts? Not that I'm there yet (still need around 80) but it would be nice to know if I need a second soul.
