Now true, I can play Baldurs Gate on the iPad, its just that I don't have the time to devote to games like I did back when it was first released. I think I flew through the gold box games fairly quickly compared to that though.

I completely agree with this. Was really looking forward to the release on ipad of BG but I have hardly played it, I just don't have the time. I was able to get through the new Shadowrun game's first campaign but it was relatively short and the graphics and playability was updated compared to the old Genesis title at least so it seemed more fun. Replaying old games has rarely worked for me. Fallout, old Space Quest, Kings Quest games...the memories of it being a blast are there, but playing them just isn't as fun anymore.

I played BG on the IPad once just for old time's sake. The game mechanics are different on the tablet, but it was a lot of fun. For me, it still remains the best D&D game ever to appear on a computer (and I go pretty far back... :D )

Even over Torment? I thought that had a much better storyline.

I'm with you Hector.  The game is fun as well as being funny as hell...they guys who wrote it really "got it".  Torment is a close second.

Yeah, Torment was pretty good also. I guess it is just a personal choice.

I really liked Neverwinter Nights.  THAT was fun, and a great game.

I still have high hopes for the SSI reunion.  Very curious to see what they do.

I re-bought many of these games via GOG last year. The GOG releases are actually good. The older games, they release with the emulator built in, so you don't have to fiddle around with DOSBox. Have I played any of them? Not really. I started 'Betrayal at Krondor' again (love that game. I bought it new in the 80s when it first came out), but am really too busy. I think I only got to chapter II. But as a teenager, I played it through more than once, exploring every nook and cranny!

(Thinks to himself ... I wonder if the word 'cranny' is every used without 'nook')

This is good news!  I have fond memories of playing Pool of Radiance and Dragon Strike as a kid.

I hope they are successful.

AC,

Last year (before the brand new PC died, long story), I found a way to play the original Pool of Radiance and other old school Commodore 64/128 games on your PC via emulator.  If you are interested, I'll try to find it again.  It was quite the flashback to the 80s - my wife did think she was a widow for about a week though.  ;-)

Testing, testing... 1...2...

Alright laddies and ladies (where applicable), just stopping by briefly for a status update.

Bad thing is I am now permanently off the inter-thingy at home. I can still access for now through the library, or sometimes at the school, though my participation will be rather limited. I am going through a process of updating the few sites I frequent to change email addys and stuff, as my old one will not work (I am dropping Comcast). It just became too expensive for someone working (thankfully) paycheck-to-paycheck, and far too much of a time sink.

In one way, it's a good thing. I can actually get stuff done around the house. It's amazing how much one can get done without sticking one's face in a screen.  :D

On the plus side, the school's annual tournament is done for the year. Big news for me: a silver in men's Advanced Yang Taiji form (out of 19 participants), a 4th in Taiji Jian (out of 10 or 11 - small group this year); 3rd in Taiji group forms. I could do more events, but there are money issues as well as my volunteer videography duties to consider.

The biggest news is that I formally received my 1st Tuan (1st degree black sash). While there is no true black sash for Taiji like there is, say, for Karate or Tae Kwan Do,  the organization my teacher presides over, The World Kuoshu Federation, does give them for contributions made towards the practice and promotion of the Chinese martial arts. Participation in events, volunteering, judging, or running events all contribute towards the awarding.

Actually it's funny you mention that.  I was talking to my brother the other day and the SSI revival came up.  We talked about POR and I mentioned how even with all those hours I spent playing it, I could never beat it.  He laughed and told me that he had read somewhere online that Pool of Radiance was actually released with some kind of bug that made it impossible to win.

No idea if this is true, but I'm choosing to believe it because it makes me feel better as a gamer.   :D

Hmm.  I do recall beating it when I played it originally on my Commodore 64... although if I recall, it took several (perhaps several DOZEN) tries and a considerable bit of luck.

That being said, if you play the emulator version, I found a map guide and tip sheet to "optimize" the play, i.e. survive the vicious encounters, and was able to beat it.

I beat it, but made lots of use out of the "clue books" that were out at the time....and it wasn't easy.

POR was evolutionary at the time.  I second that it was tough.  I completed it on a Commodore Amiga.  I loved those computer!

Yep, that was a favorite.

I completed it but it did take a while on a Commodore 64 or 128.  I remember I was a bit disappointed in the final cut scene but otherwise I really liked.

I played the whole series on my Commodore 64 and 128 - spent years of my teenage+ youth playing thos games!  Heck, I enjoyed the text-based games on my Vic20 too.

I remember playing a very early text-based D&D game on my friend's Apple64. I can't remember the game now. But it was an amazing and intriguing experience playing it. Type 'n' ... You travel North. Type 'look' ... There is nothing here. Type 'n' ... You travel north. Type 'look' ... There is a cave nearby. Type 'enter cave' ... It is dark (dang forgot to light my torch. They were so much fun ... And I have vivid memories ... The power of imagination. I wonder how our children will look back on their early gaming memories? And where will it all end ... About  |  No Man's Sky ... that game will apparently take procedurally generated adventure to new heights ... I read if you visit a planet each second, it would take you 5 billion years to explore the universe that game will create.

Hermit, sounds like the old Zork games. I remember entering "maximum verbosity" to get the game to cough up all the details. And was that the one where you put a towel over your head so the grue wouldn't see you? I played on a Commodore 64 until I upgraded to an Amiga 500.  Good times.
