This article reminds me of the David Weseley story. Imagine it - it's the late 1960s, you're on the cusp of inventing the role-playing game with the Braunstein campaign, & suddenly you get orders to relocate hundreds of miles away. How many of the NCOs mentioned in the article will abandon gaming groups for this? Why do they need so many recruiters in such a hurry anyway?

While searching rpgish stuff, i found this gem:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

This is likely the best game i've ever played (at least in terms of depth and involvement). What a great time i had with that game, in part with the sixth chapter... what a great memories!

Such a great franchise. My wife and I played Ultima online for years. We still reminisce about it.

That was the first PC game (Ultima, Second Trilogy) that I bought when I was a kid. I loved that franchise so much - feels like yesterday when my friends and I argued Ultima vs Wizardry superiority during school recess, lol

Ultima and Wizardry were both awesome games!

If anyone is interested you can get these on GOG.com. They often have discounted and combo deals on these too.

Jennell is doing much better, but has a long road of recovery ahead of her. She's still breathing through a tube in her throat. GBS never really goes away or gets much better.

Amazing series. There is a maze somewhere in there where you can move one step back and forward and generate a mob. Rinse and repeat. I wrote a macro for it at one point.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

The first game I bought for my Mac in the early 90s was Ultima Underworld: the Stygian Abyss. I adored that game.

Relevant question, but probably not fitting into any of the catagories here...

For those of you's who publish, small press practicioners, and any of the larger press people who may be lurking, I'm looking for software recommendations that are good at handling the layout and formatting of text and graphics in two/three columns per page (as opposed to one block of text interspersed with piccies in a fanzine style.)

Is everyone here and Adobe Design Cloud subscriber?

I realise the world has moved on and everything I see (software) online is marketted with beautifully flowing colour graphics overlayed with text, but I need something simpler (wysiwyg) to start off with. So I'm looking to find out what other people do when they need to go beyond Notepad or whatever.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Adobe FrameMaker was once considered the next step up from MS Word, but my knowledge on that is about 15 years old. Wikipedia tells me it's still around, though I don't know if better options have appeared since.

Nearly 15 years ago i used Adobe Pagemaker for output profesionally done (i used to prepare WotC translations into the official 3.5 layout)... after that point i lost any relevant info...
However from the previous reply and you starting question, my reccomendation is to look for Adobe Something!

Something's bugging me. Most people feel or say the economy is doing terrible because of "inflation." Overall, employment is back to record highs, jobless rates are near historic lows, wages have been rising faster than before the health crisis, and overall economic growth has been running well above trend. Indeed, inflation was terrible back in the summer of 2022 at around 9%. Today it's being reported as 3.2% and the Fed wants inflation to be around 2% which means they're getting close. It may take awhile to get to 2%, but still, inflation at 3.2% is not terrible in my opinion. I suspect some people don't realize that the only way prices are going back down is through deflation, something economists usually say is worse than inflation. Therefore, what people are actually upset about is not inflation but the effects of inflation; it's something you could call sticker shock. I'll be the first to admit I'm no economist, but you'd think someone would clarify this oddity to the public.... or maybe I'm missing something. Perhaps there's just a lag between the economic numbers and the way they're perceived? 8)

The step up from Notepad is MS Word, which can do 2 or 3 columns. If you want a lot of control over placement, Adobe InDesign or (the cheaper alternative) Affinity Publisher. Both of which may require a day or two to learn how to use well.

Although InDesign is what the pros use, Creative Cloud installs a lot of background processes on your computer. It's disgusting.

Yep. I can't be bothered with all the telemetry stuff that is installed by everyone these days. I put up with it with MS because I need it for work. Aside from that Notepad++ is a go to because of infinate undo (until you save) and search and replace are good. I'm playing around with Word right now and I'll see hwo it goes.
