No clue if it is the right price...

Pretty far from the correct price - this one is a fake.

To the uninitiated, what makes this stand out as a fake?  The loop on the back, the carving on the front?

Holmes "prisoners edition" here with lights and shadows:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Lights: a dice set is present, an extra module is present

Shadows: rulebook is in poor condtions, there is a d10 die which should not be present (is the dice set original?)

Dunno, but when looking it up I noticed this: "Sixth (Nov-Dec 1979)...has a dice bag with six-preinked dice, no crayon" on this Acaeum page: Basic Set
Is it supposed to read five dice rather than six? The dice look about right (other than the D10 the seller says was added), though I don't see a listing on the Acaeum page for a B1 edition with both chits & dice.

Going by what just a Holmes set of dice sold for on fb today, everything else is merely $10 more (albeit this auction still has 10 hours to go, as of my writing).

That's not a bad price on those Grenadier Catalogs, they've been fairly hot lately.

I agree. Here's another 'bargain' due to the dice factor:

I suspect that quite a few people have been duped by these over the past few years.

This particular one, along with the similar pewter/silver version are the two that have been counterfeited.

Several telltale signs can be typically used to spot a fake belt buckle:

The plastic wrapper.  The newer reproductions typically have this wrapper or a box with a liner.  These can obviously be easily removed.
The loop for this belt buckle was never straight, at least as far as I've seen.  This particular loop example is also a different color and way too clean.
The machine-polished front, with no patina from age.
The rear patina is identical to similar counterfeits.  It has an artificially produced antiquing over the entire surface, which is inconsistent with the front.
The rear post is not entirely correct.  This is something that used to be much worse, but has been improved by the counterfeiters over time, so for the typical person, this might not be obvious.
The manufacturer's stamp and copyright are more washed out than the original.
The general details are washed out and not as pronounced as the original.
There are sometimes manufacturing defects that the originals rarely had, as the quality control was better.  This particular example has one, which you can see, if you look over the photos carefully.

These aren't all of the signs, but some of the more obvious ones.

Unfortunately, because of a deluge of these counterfeits, it's very difficult to trust that any buckles that are listed are authentic.  I would not recommend purchasing a vintage TSR belt buckle, unless it has the provenance to support its authenticity, or it comes from a collector that has an excellent reputation.

is this another fake, because of the D shaped latch?  I thought this person was a reputable seller.

The belt loop on the buckle appears to be incorrect.  BUT, the post that goes into the belt hole does appear correct (the other major way to tell a fake).  I think there are a lot of fakes that have made it into collections and are now being sold by resellers without knowledge.  IMHO, the collector should assume a buckle is fake unless it comes from a known source (TSR employee, Collector's Trove, etc).
