No, baseball season will continue as long as the Cowboys continue to play like a ladies high school lacrosse team and the Rangers continue winning.

Then it will hopefully segue into basketball season (if/when the come off strike) where the world champion Dallas Mavericks defend their crown.

Other than that, I'm finished with professional football except for the fantasy kind until Jerry Jones keels over and whoever takes his place hires a general manager. For those that aren't in the know, this has been the worst decade of Cowboys football in it's 50 year history. For the team that had the longest playoff run in NFL history, as well as the most superbowl appearances, this is unforgivable. Give me Rangers and Mavericks until someone gets a clue over at the Deathstar.

Mariners? What? Who?

The Seahawks are 1-3.

Is "mariners" some sort of knickname for the Seahawks? Some sort of complex play on words, as in "sinking ship?"

No idea what you're talking about.

I get pissed off when NFL announcers break away to talk about baseball, and apoplectic when they mention the NBA. It's like breaking away from a showing of The 13th Warrior to talk about My Little Pony.

You can say that again. I am SO glad the Yankees are out of the playoffs if for no other reason than I truly believe any game they are in lasts 30 minutes longer on average than all other MLB games. Of course my other reason is that they try to buy their championships. Sheesh. Good-bye.

Hey, for 100 million more the Spankees got to play in two more games than the Red Sox! Up there, believe me, that's considered a win-win. Gentlemen, gentlemen. Please. This is just more sour grapes. It's all very simple.

When you win, people come to see your games. They buy your caps and t-shirts and coffee mugs. And they'll tune in to watch when you're on TV.

Good players want to win. They want to come to play for a team they know shares that attitude and will give them a good chance at success.
But the top players expect top pay so you have to pay for them. That's just the way the pro sports work.

To summarize-
Winning teams make money.
Money pays good players.
Good players want to play for you and they help you win.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
It's a simple concept.

The Yankees owners know their business, know baseball and are very motivated to field a winning team.

If YOUR team's ownership either doesn't care about reinvesting in the team, or doesn't know how to run a business, or doesn't know how to attract and retain talent, or can't negotiate TV contracts or fill a stadium, or whatever- that's their problem. Hate on them.

Yeah, but New York has one thing most other markets don't have, and that's way more people who will buy those shirts and hats and pay exhorbitant prices for their tickets. MLB unfortunately has set up a system where population and money make a difference instead of just the game. I'm not saying the NFL has it right, but I like their model better than MLB.

On top of this, I am under the impression that many Yankees fans (and some other large market team fans too) know this, and are snobbishly happy they have this advantage and simply say their team is better without acknowledging this foundational unfairness.

Not true. I can give quite a few examples of how false this is. But I only really need one.

The Chicago Cubs, with 3,017,966 fans attending, reached the three-million mark for the eighth season in a row and are one of only four Major League franchises to surpass the mark in every year since 2004. And it's not sour grapes. We just love it when underdog teams like the Florida Marlins can have the lowest salary in baseball and still win a World Series over free spending teams like the Yankees and Red Sox with all their bandwagon and fairweather fans.

Oh, and on a side note, regarding people buying caps and t-shirts of winning teams....all too true.

Like my friend that wears a Yankees cap. I asked him a question about the team a couple of years ago. His response: I dont really know anything about them. I just like them because they win a lot. The only player he knew by name was Derek Jeter. :roll:

And the guy I used to work with that wore a Manchester United shirt to work one day. Didnt even know who Wayne Rooney was. He just liked them because they were a popular team.

100% agree, I have to especially say it was sweet when the Marlins beat the Yankees in the 2003 WS, considering that I am a Marlins fan.

Unfortunately, Miami as a sports town really sucks...when compared to the other great sports towns across the US.

Dude, basketball has the worst bandwagon fans EVER. Go anywhere in Dallas, New York, Boston, hell Oklahoma, and you'll see as many Lakers/Heat jerseys and hats as hometown merch. As a rule, basketball fans are more fans of an individual than a team, so you have Kobe fans, Lebron fans, Rose fans, etc. They really know very little about the team, but like to wear the jerseys of the players they like and follow from team to team. Nothing pissed me off more last year than seeing Heat jersey's in Dallas when the finals was rolling around....really? Miami puts together a super team and you guys go out and buy the jersey? And now they are in the finals? Where the hell were you months ago? Now that's loyalty. :roll:

BTW, this is what made the Maverick's victory over the Heat in the finals last year one of the best feel good stories in sports ever. Like the Marlins over the Yankees years ago, the good guys and their long-suffering fans won and the bad guys and their evil followers went down to ignominious defeat!

In the early '80s, the catastrophe of Reaganomics led to a huge migration from the rust belt to oil-rich places like my hometown of Houston. Lots of these kids wore Pittsburgh Steelers clothing, the rivals of the Oilers. It was even echoed in the neighborhood high schools' colors: one was columbia blue, while the adjacent high school was black & gold.

That's what I remember from this era: early D&D, & Steelers gear worn in Houston. There's a world of symbolism here, beyond sports.
