Re to the NTRPGcon reprint, i know the digest size version... But i completely miss the letter size one... I am pretty sure only the digest size was sold by Badmike after the con... Is it possible that this is a PoD that is recently sold by Precis Intermedia?

I wonder about that all the time. If you talk to someone, how do you know it's really them? Maybe it's someone else in a disguise to fool you, so when you accept them they'll pull off the disguise & everyone will start laughing. I used to see this clerk at a convenience store all the time, then one day I figured out that they had been replaced by a lizard wearing a disguise. It's not the kind of customer service I'd expect from a national chain. Fortunately we have a solution:

In the late 80's/early 90's I used to work for a major highstreet music label in the UK. We had the largest RPG section on the highstreet. We regularly shrinkwrapped everything that came it on the same shrinkwrap machine we used for shrinwrapping records. I think there were many stores that shrinkwrapped product to minimise casual browsing. Even today. A lot of second hand stuff at my local games store is shrinkwrapped. I have no way of knowing if any of it is legit, 1980's shrinkwrap, buy I know for sure a chunk isn't cost I sold a my collection to them and a lot of it is still there on the racks.

So you have no way of knowing if its shrinkwrap from a vendor at publication date, or shrinkwrap from a second hand store that got a VGC copy in and wanted to preserve its condition for his potential buyer. Unless its authenticated (like you're buying a modern product from the publisher directly), or shrink wrapped on a TSR hanger, then shrinkwrap is a packing material no different to seran wrap (cling film) or bubble wrap for that matter.

But at least its a genuine 1071, which means better print quality and crisper reading experience over the PoDs that seem so prevalent these days.

This would be an obvious auction to avoid at all costs; who knows what is inside that book, even if the price was much lower.

It's right at the limit of what I'd pay for a NM copy, and I'm in the market for one, but my issue is exactly that. I could buy on faith and trust eBay's handling of the distance selling laws in the UK (i.e. if I want a refund for any reason in the first 14 days I get it), but it being a US seller it's not worth the potential hassle, so I'll give it a pass.

In the late 90's I did similar for the biggest D&D seller in Melbourne, Australia (while was at Uni). We had almost the idential process. What I would say though, is even after shrink wrapping hundreds of different items (and my boss thousands) I dont think it'd pass muster/sight versus the eyes of people here. We never wrapped or received shrink wrapped product for A4 sized roleplaying books though (to my memory).

The only stuff I recall arriving shrinkwrapped was boxed sets, and of course they were opened for customers to browse at the desk and then re-shrinkwrapped as needed, so even if you have a Planescape in 'original' shrinkwrap, if you thought it from a retail outlet, after the first day of release, the odds are high that it is not in its 'original' shrinkwrap, but was shrinkwrapped in the shop after quite a few readers hands had already flicked through it.
