Classic stuff - Why does ebay bother with this kind of discussion - I'd probably respect them more if they out-and-out said - "there is no real option, suck it up!"

Maybe you should start offering free product with free shipping while tucking a few crispy $$ bills in the packages... Geez, very helpful there.. now off top read that "Discussion"

Anyway, if you want a laugh, read this discussion on one of Ebay's workshops.  The EBay hack goes on and lists a bunch of ridiculous strategies for raising your DSR scores, then invites questions. The rep gets absolutely HAMMERED by pissed off sellers, ends up not answering about 90% of the questions, and basically stammers out lame buzzwords in an attempt to get through the Q&A session. Funny stuff.

BTW better read it quick, last time they had one of these over 100 posts were removed afterwards...

This ebay workshop  suggests that U.S. sellers quit selling internationally, what an idiot. I get most of my AD&D merchandise from the U.S. If you sellers were to listen to that moron I unfortunately and regrettably would have to find a new hobby.

I wonder where Ebay gets these idiots who host these workshops and answer questions on their forums?  If I didnt know any better, I might think that all of those questions were answered by some proto-AI that Ebay developed so they wouldnt actually have to employ people.     Odds are though that they are probably hiring former self-help specialists and HR Managers that failed in their previous jobs.  Some of the crap posted there was unbelievably asinine.  This was one of my favorites:

Concerned seller comment:

I am a small seller, and I am not going to incur the expense of getting a special phone number for buyers to call. A separate e-mail isn't necessary, because I ALWAYS respond to buyer e-mails the same day, usually within a couple of hours, as I am often online. I have never received a negative, and never would receive a justified one, as I am extremely honest in my description, my shipping, etc. My buyers LOVE me -- check my feedback!

And now ebay has lost me, and many other excellent sellers, due to the asinine decision to remove our ability to leave honest feedback, and the just slightly less damaging asinine decision to implement the DSRs.

Ebay TRULY does not listen to ebayers!

Ebay dickhead's reply:

If you are a serious business seller, this may not be a great decision, but the good news is that other sellers will probably step in to fill the gap left by your absence.

Best of luck in your next selling adventure!

One thing that also struck me as unbelievably stupid is that Ebay is actually telling these sellers to not only beg for five stars from their buyers and ship the goods for free but also that they need to educate buyers on how the new DSR system works.  Isn't that Ebay's job?

Ebay used to be fun....now it is turning into a joke.

Oh yeah...based on this statement, Cougarrinard should be Ebay's poster boy:

The best strategy in the short-term is to compensate for this discrepancy by over-communicating and actively driving towards the result you want to get from a buyer.

As a buyer, the last thing I want is for a seller that I just bought a $5 book from to spam the hell out of my email account asking for me to leave positive feedback and to remember to leave five stars.  :?

You know, I hadn't thought about this in a while, but you're absolutely right.

I feel bad for anyone starting out on eBay now, or someone who's started, say, in the past six months or so ... no lie; I really do. What a cheerless slog eBay has become. Long gone are the days that had a sense of community or of a shared adventure. Yes, it could be chaotic at times (and witnessing truly bizarre behavior was not that uncommon), but the fees were reasonable, the playing field was level, and the entire community was largely self-policed and self-correcting.

Christ, that seems like it was ages ago. It really is a damn shame.

The best part of the whole so called "workshop" was the large number of times they pimped their business and how successful the sellers are who used them.

Personally I don't know of any other Internet business that rates buyers. I do 90% of my buying online and have never been rated as a customer except on eBay.

I think that anonymous DSR's are wrong, but then again I think the Pos/Neg Feedback thing is bogus too.

Just my thoughts and opinions

Thats the problem with thinking on your feet and trying to answer questions and those answers staying were you put em;) .. what they really needed was a more "diplomatic" person that could put a spin on anything... but that is what policy updates are for, well thought out spins telling you how good things will be...

Just a quick note about RPG Marketplace - it doesn't appear to support encryption of data. I didn't get past the registration screen because I wasn't prepared to submit my personal info in the open. I agree, it looks great but sorry, if there's no security then that's a problem for me. I contacted the admin to ask if there are any intentions to secure data transmissions. If the answer is yes then I'm in there and will happily give eBay the push.

I just love how he keeps avoiding the extremely valid point about the 4 rating; 4 is great, unless you are a seller, then you get screwed.

His solution to some very genuine concerns is appalling. Ebay has made sellers 100% responsible for delivery to the buyer's front door within minutes of the customer purchasing the item. And you have to do it for free. Sure...

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

If reading that "Workshop" wasn't enough for people to see what Ebay is looking to do, nothing will.  Ebay does not want to deal with small time sellers anymore, period.  They want to become the next Amazon and they really have to only deal with very large companies.  If you as a seller range from medium to small, Ebay clearly could care less if you go or stay.  The writing is on the wall.

Being that its obvious who is running that site and thus looking to profit from it, I think I will pass.

That's a shame, Brian. While you are certainly entitled to your own opinion, I think the site is a great idea and someone like yourself would certainly be a welcome addition.

I hope more Acaeum users give it a shot - hell, it's free. I'm going to give it a shot for awhile and see if it grows.

As far as encryption of data, there is nothing "personal" other than name and address that I was required to submit. The site never asked me for a PayPal password or anything of that sort, and it certainly didn't ask me for a credit card or my SSN.

Just my two cents - as I said, we are all welcome to our opinions. I would LOVE to see my store buried under a dozen others...it's about time something came along to give people a decent alternative to eBay.

This Scot Wingo (wanker?) has a blog over on his channeladviser site.

Check out his February 13 blog, it gives the background for his "top 10 (sic)" list. http://ebaystrategies.blogs.com/ebay_strategies/2008/02/ebay-changes-st.html

Here is the first couple of lines in it.

In preparation for our webinar earlier today, we spent a great deal of time at ChannelAdvisor analyzing our data on the top 4000 eBay sellers (by GMV NOT feedback).  We ran all the sellers through our free DSRWatch utility and sorted the data.  As you would imagine the 'shipping and handling charges' DSR is the lowest (avg 3.9) for the top sellers.

However, based on this data, we did find 400 sellers that had all DSRs > 4.8........

Didn't he and eBay state that only the bottom 1% of sellers had DSR's below 4.5

He goes on to state that his "top 10" list is based on

What makes these 150 elite sellers able to get their S+H charges DSR above 4.8

Funny, he claimed to have over 6000 clients with all DSR's Equal to or greater than 4.8

I would maybe consider that freerpgmarketplace thing, if it didn't require me to use email addresses I don't have, and will not have. For example, there is a very good reason I prefer my gmail account(s): one, they are accessible anywhere, for free -- I don't need some remote solution to access, say, Outlook, or rely on some stupid ISP to deliver my mail; and 2) the ISP I am forced to use no longer exists (bought out,) and therefore, any address related to it no longer functions, or functions very intermittently (because its basically a forward alias.) I got into this site, somehow, using a gmail account *must not have been banned at that time), and the same for eBay, too.

Oh, and yes eBay is killing themselves, but I highly doubt the majority of users even know that thing exists, much less have the intelligence or desire to read it.

In regard to RPG Marketplace;

I took a quick look at the site and based on it's current configuration, I wouldn't touch that place with a 10 foot pole.

Why you ask?

The about me page is all but blank
There is no contact information listed under contact us
Here is a direct quote from the FAQ on becoming a seller.

If you wish to be a seller, you must PM me from your account at The Acaeum, Dragonsfoot or eBay.

Please email me at admin@rpgmarketplace.com with your request and I will give you my contact info for the one you wish to use.

I will verify your reputation with others from one of those sites before you are allowed to sell.
I will also call you on the phone number you listed as well as to a reverse lookup on your number to verify your address.

There is absolutely no protection on the site to stop hacks, phishing or other types of attacks.

Nope, No, not a chance.

If who ever put it up would set it up correctly and treat it like a real site, They might succeed in making a go at of it

But the way it is right now. not a chance in my humble opinion.

Huh...?! I'm not following..... In any case, I'm going to hold off on joining eBay (as a buyer) since it seems to be in flux at the moment. I'm all for supporting sellers with integrity (who all here that have posted seem to be), as without you there would be no marketplace. I will certainly be in the market (soon) for some nice copies of the common modules, and will post in the Classified section in a couple of weeks (waiting for a retroactive pay raise to come through, might as well waste the difference :).
