Fake? or is it one of those TSR photocopies from just before discontinuing the product but after their print run ran out?
The cover seems to be some kind of heavy stock if you look at the upper part by the spine where it has split, though it is hard to tell.

(notice that the entire cover is in B&W rather than the typical magenta titles and tan cover stock. The photo is full color, as you can see by the wood cabinets in the background.)

Not entirely sure what to make of it. If it were a straight photocopy, the magenta titles would have turned out rather gray-ish. The "Dungeons & Dragons" almost looks like it is heading in that direction, though much darker than I would expect, while the "Greyhawk" looks pure black. Setting a copier to image darker would have filled in many details on the logo and art. Also, the mottled cover pattern of the original stock would likely be showing.

Agreed. Condition, perhaps? It does look purty, but I didn't think it'd get a bid at $2500 either.

Rarity is about a  3.5 on a 5 scale.
You will see copies on e-Bay about once a month or so.
That copy is sorta rough though the current price (just over $20 USD) is still in range IMO.

I picked up a couple for a little more than that price a while ago from the seller.  They do not look exactly like the ones that are shown in the listing.  I'm a bit skeptical as to whether they are genuine.  The wire used for the belt loop is not the same diameter, and does not look the same as the pictures used in the listing.  It could be the lighting in the pictures I suppose.  It's really hard to determine though, since the ones I have are pristine, with nary a blemish.  It just seems implausible that they could be that old and not have any signs of age.  I don't have an "original" to compare to though.

Frank M. is probably one of the most knowledgeable sources on these buckles.  I recall that he did chime in on these originally.  Perhaps Frank would be willing to take a closer look at them?
