There is no doubt that the police system and court system at all levels in italy are rife with incompetence and corruption. Organised crime has had a grip of those systems either through direct intervention or financial intervention for maybe 200 years. You cannot remove crime from a country run by crime lords, and those in position of office by virtue of their criminal connection or political will, have no need to learn or perform their job function. We see the same in most 2nd world countries around the world, and in most 3rd world countries.

The difference is that for for the last century, Italy has been trying to pull itself from 2nd world democracy to first world democracy, and is getting close to be considered a credible democratic nation. Then every now and then they drop their guard and either elect a criminal into high office, or expose how corrupt their judiciary are, or how little they care for honesty and the truth. Hense this fiasco.

All said though, the fact that a US citisen can buy their won joice of verdict within their own country, or in any other country with few exceptions anywhere else in the world, is pretty corrupt also. The difference here is that on home soil you need considerably more resources that the Knox family had at their disposal. If this had happenned on US soil, she'd have gone down for 40+ or gone to the chair. It is only nationalism that allows your average US citisen to believe she's innocent. At least that's the general impression the US press are giving about US feeling on the streets to the UK media.

At the end of the day, most of what you read, see and hear is not presented without an underlying agenda, and the same goes for what is reported here in the UK, and the Knox family are not ever going to tell the truth, and neither are any of the other parties involved, so there could never be any justice. There are a lot of italians who got a whole lot richer over this, and not all of them are probably known to the world. Maybe the italian justice system of vendetta is the only way justice can work in such a country. Maybe enough money in the right hands would get the victim's family justice; but then they'd have to lower their morals to those of the perpetrators to achieve justice, and that goes against the general UK ethic of fair play.

I'll be honest.  I never thought she was guilty. As to her going to the chair, that would only happen if she did her crime in Texas.  As to your statement about her going 40+ in the US, I think we established with the Casey Anthony case that it takes more than a prosecutor pointing a finger at her to get a conviction.  The knife in her apartment had her dna on it; the knifes in my house have my dna on them.

As to a US citizen being able to buy justice.....Good for us!!!

I agree with most of what you say, Ian, except that I doubt she would have been convicted in the US. Call it the "CSI Effect", but most jurors in the US now are inordinately predisposed to both DNA evidence and a "narrative" in declaring someone guilty.  Knox's case had even less going for it than the Casey Anthony case, and we saw what happened there. With no DNA and no narrative (they never came up with anything resembling a coherent motive for Kercher's murder, most Americans would have rolled their eyes at the "Orgy Thrill Murder For No Reason" crap), I have a feeling this would have never even come to trial here.

Also, while rich people can benefit more from good counsel than poor people, plenty of millionaires get locked up for life here in the US to prove that money alone aint' gonna save you if the evidence is overwhelming (Phil Spector, John Du Pont, Bernie Madoff)

What Amanda's family "bought" was a fair trial.

In this case, the identity of the murderer is remarkably clear.

He left his blood, fingerprints, bloody footprints and feces at the crime scene.

The only connection between Rudy Guede (actual killer) and Knox or Sollecito was that Guede got time off of his sentence in order to help frame them.

It is unlikely that Knox will re-offend, because she never was a criminal.  That was entirely the construction of a corrupt and incompetent system.

You cannot purchase justice in the US.  You can, however, purchase good legal counsel.  Millionaires go to prison all the time in the United States.

One example of wealth buying justice would be the Duke lacrosse players who were accused of a rape that never happened (rock solid evidence showed that one of them wasn't even present).

Poor kids would have eventually beaten the falsified DNA evidence, the ludicrous lies of their accuser and a corrupt district attorney.  It just would have taken more time.

The rich kids...and people not even associated with their non-crime...were still punished.  They lost parts of their lives and reputations.  Some completely innocent people lost their jobs and their teammates lost scholarships and a season of lacrosse.  Poor kids would probably have spent more time in jail awaiting justice.  The ultimate result, however, would have been the same.

(And...an aside....I could not figure out why anyone found Casey Anthony to be an attractive or sympathetic figure in any way.)

I do not find her attractive or sympathetic, because when I see her I'm only looking at her boobs.

If a paedophile can pay off witnesses and buy expertise, or a murderer can walk free because he can afford to pay for a greater quantity of doubt that the state is willing to pay for in evidence, then money buys the verdist in the US. You just need to be willing and able to expend more moeny than the state proscecuting you.

Whilst there is clearly incompetence and coruption in the italian police force, and they clearly need training up to western world standards (especially if they want to continue being part of the EU), the 'innocence' of Knox is dubious at best, and most likely a fabrication and bias of the US propaganda machine than any real basis in fact. In the US, procedure would have been carried out correctly, her presence at the flat established clearly, the extent of her knowledge and/or participation established, and she'd have been sentenced accordingly.

I hate to have to be the one to break it to you, but these claims have virtually no basis in reality. You seem to be judging the entire US legal system on a handful of cases that have become spectacles (Anthony, O.J., Michael Jackson, etc.).. Yeah, occasionally we have a criminal case where the media ends up substantially affecting the outcome (though hardly in a direct proportion to money spent), either due to celebritry involvement or the sensational nature of the crime, or both.

There are statistics that indicate a tendency to convict African American suspects more often than "White" ones, but when it comes to violent crime, especially at the level of murder, class isn't much of a factor.

I wasn't talking about class. Class isn't as related to money in the US as it is in other countries, and I was talking about money and the ability to buy expertise, council, marketting and PR teams, and such things that shouldn't, but do, influence the outcomes of cases. Why should any person employ a marketting team and a PR agency, if not to influence the outcome of a case. We all know that money talks, and when it gets down to a case that is being coverred heavily by the media, that the more money you have to buy influence with the media, the more favourable spin you can put on a case.

Clearly, in a society like the US, that bar of influence is set very high indeed. You have law and oversight, and checks and balances that are meant to minimise such influence. But in a country like Italy where the law and judiciary are far more primative, and where the corruption and influence of money are ingrained into the society's culture and ethic, it takes far less money to buy influence, and the ability to manipulate falls within the scope of many families who can lay their hands on the appropriate wealth and suitably informed 'council'.

I'm not saying that the US system doesn't work. What I'm saying is that the learned ability and mechanism for buying justice that is played out and learned in the US in extreme cases, is and has been transposed, where someone can break the law, and then buy themselves a favourable outcome and a lily white reputation with the liberal distribution of money to all who need to receive it to see things go the way they want it to.

This case has nothing to do with innocence or guilt. It has everything to do with corruption throughout public service and a police force who's procedures haven't changed since the second world war, and a family who have exploited that (rightly so) to free their daughter.

But do they give a F about whether or not their daughter helped murder someone? And do they give a F about finding the truth or being honest? Do they hell. So long as their money has bought them the result they want and they can recoup their money and monopolise on her notoriety, they couldn't give a rats ass about the victim, and they certainly will never tell the truth.

Do you mean 'guilt' as in she physically stabbed the victim? Or do you mean 'guilt' as in she was an accessory? I don't think she physically stabbed the victim, but that does not make her innocent. In fact, US law comes down far heavier on people who happened to be there than most countries, which ironically would have made it far more likely a US court would have sent her away for a long stretch.

As MetamorphosisSigma points out, money buys you far less in the outcome of a case in the US than it does in more backwards societies, so the likelihood of evidence potentially being contaminated would have been remote, and you'd have been able to put her on a lie detector, and video all her interviews, and all this stuff would have been available to help determine the likely chain of events.

I am probably going to regret this, but

1) I think most Americans would agree that wealth and education have both proved to be factors, sometimes significant factors, in many court cases in many countries, even America.  Whether they were significant enough to affect verdicts is another matter.  I personally believe that the American justice system gets it right the vast majority of the time.

2) I think many Americans who have read about this case and kept up with it believe Amanda Knox is innocent, and not mainly because she is American in another country.  The evidence does not appear to convict her.

3) It is interesting to me that the primary Italian reaction to the case appears to be that American weight/money/influence changed/impacted the verdict.  What that tells me is that the Italians I saw on TV were more interested in sticking to America or Amanda than the evidence.  I will readily admit the press is often more interested in conflict than accurate representation, so I want to apologize for appearing to make a judgment based on what the press revealed.  It was just an observation based upon what I saw and read recently.

4) I suspect most all Americans are deeply sorry for the death of this beautiful British girl and hope the perpetrator(s) are caught.  This is the biggest tragedy in all of this to me.

5) It is interesting to me that it is now being reported that Amanda Knox wants to now help other international prisoners who are wrongly accused.  Maybe it's a publicity stunt, or maybe it's the heartfelt reaction.  Time will tell.

8)

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

The perpetrator is in prison.  The prosecutor and police detectives remain at large.

There are substantial differences in how this was portrayed in the American press, vs. the rest of the world. From the US, I read that Knox and Sollecito called the police, & were waiting for them when a second police agency showed up with Kercher's cell phones. In news stories from outside the US, I read that the police with the cell phones showed up, & then 20 minutes later, Knox and Sollecito called the first police agency. Two completely different sequences of events, leading to different conclusions in the court of public opinion.

Then we have the supposed motive. In the US, the stories always mention the theory about a sex game gone awry. The prevalence of this bit suggests that Italian prosecutors were obsessed with pure speculation of the wildest & implausible sort. This is mentioned with much less frequency in the foreign press, where it is presented as one of many hypotheticals.

So sure, if you only hear one side of a hotly contested issue, those on the other side appear to be monsters. If you live in the NW US, ground zero for pro-Knox sentiment, the issue must seem clear as day.

....but since there ended up being no DNA evidence, no motive, no witnesses, and probably no coercion of witnesses, the case would have never even gotten to the stage of a trial in the US. Knox would have been no-billed.  The people that still insist she is guilty in the presence of zero evidence puzzle me as much as those who still insist OJ didn't murder Nicole Smith in the face of mountains of evidence, including DNA.  It has never been satisfactorily explained why a bright young girl with no prior crime record would wantonly murder someone in some sort of bizarre sex crime when in another country for no reason except the fact they must love thrill killing.  I think as many have stated it fills the stereotype of what most Euros have of the wanton, narcissistic, perverted, sick,  ugly American.....no further evidence necessary, lock them up.  Thank Goodness in one of the few cases of justice actually being served she's back home safe and soon to be the recipient of millions of dollars in well earned cash.
