Hi Allan,
I'm not seeing what you are seeing:

Third UK print (Nov 1978).  Most closely matches the Fourth print US version, with some differences:

Blue box with a picture of a red dragon (artwork by Sutherland).  Box sides are in solid black, not blue (continuation of the cover artwork) like the US version

Lizard logo in lower left, "Games Workshop" in yellow script on box side

Code in the upper right is "1001"

Angled yellow banner in upper left says "Basic Set With Introductory Module"

48-page rulebook:  Lizard logo in lower left,  with "F116-R" in upper right and "*T.M. Reg. App. For" under the D&D logo; contains references to Hobbits (see bottom of page 11).  The copyright page states "Second Edition, Nov 1978", and has both the Lizard logo and Games Workshop logo at the bottom of the page.  Back-cover catalog does not have prices.

B1 In Search of the Unknown (UK print, no shrinkwrap)

Five pre-colored dice in a small poly bag (no D10 or dice crayon)

Bottom of box shows rulebook, module B1 (US pre-production print), five dice, and has the Games Workshop logo

Thanks to Michael Deaton and Paul MacLean for this info

The 1001 is on the box set. The "48-page rulebook" section matches the one in the auction. If I'm missing something else please let me know.

Mike

You're right, I wasn't reading sufficiently far down in the page, stopping at the box description and not getting to the booklet.  Sigh... ;)

Thanks!

Allan.

Seems to be a 1st print (blank bottom of the box!):

** expired/removed eBay auction **

Ok, now it is at starting price (which seems to me already high)... Any idea of the final value?

This one really surprised me where it ended.  I have a folded copy but I have never seen one that was rolled.

Does anyone here have a rolled copy?

Hello Mrs. Cleaver, Theodore.

Gee, Mrs. Cleaver ... That certainly is a lovely dress.

Nope, mine's folded & was a freebie at a game store. Is the folded version rare?

Wow. He had several auctions end at terrific numbers (for him). The copy I have is folded also.

They are actually more of a drab brown color, and yes, I've seen them before.  I don't think there as common though.

I have a set like this. The plastic has a marble appearance, something common in later dice, but which I haven't seen before in early-'80s TSR dice. The exception is the D8, which has the ordinary flat color I would expect. Or was there another manufacturer of uninked dice that are marbled but otherwise indistinguishable from TSR dice?

I read somewhere that marbled or swirled appearance is from the moulds not being cleaned after changing different color plastic. You’ve just got some of the light blue maybe contaminating the brown. I have some that are heavily swirled, some totally flat.

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.
