Hi,

Cameron has offered a pact with the Lib Dems.
Brown has offered a referendum on proportional representation.

Looks like Clegg will be having a busy weekend.


Apparently all the "lock-outs" occurred at seats with large majorities ie they would haven't made any difference to the result.

An interesting point based on the amount of votes cast for whom -

share percentage of votes (at 648 out of 650 seats declared): Lib Dem - 149.04 seats at 23%, Lab - 188.568 seats at 29.1%, Con - 233.928 seats at 36.1%, others - 77.12 seats at 11.9%.

Not reflected in the actual seats won however...

So the Conservatives are the strongest party after the election?

I thought it might work out like that.

Our American media reported that the British elections were "Close."

Whenever our media says "Close," that means whatever conservative party is in the race is leading and likely to win.

If Labour had been slightly ahead our media would have reported, "Labour Wins Election," or "Labour Wins New Mandate From Voters."

Your Tory party has the most votes, so the election is "Close."

The same thing happened a few years ago when Ariel Sharon's Likud party was unseating the Labor party in Israel.  Our media reported that Israel's election was "Too Close to Call," which is how I knew that Likud had won.  

What interests me now is how a coalition will form.  Or will it?

Viewed from America, it is difficult to see why there is a Labour Party and a Liberal Party.  

Do the Liberals have more in common with the Tories than with Labour?

Or, is there some other election event still to follow....like another election?

Take you pick on what axis to look at, but getting anything workable for the longer term from the current state of play over here will probably be a bit like driving up and downhill blindfold without a steering wheel to get to the other side.

I know that people in education are disappointed with him.  They actually expected sanity and an end to No Child Left Behind.  NOPE.  Instead, we have federal coercion for the states to adopt so-called merit pay and a president blathering about how all students should exit high school, "prepared for college or work."

(Good idea, Mr. President!  Pepared for college or work!  Why didn't anyone else think of that before?  To think of all the time we've wasted in the past preparing them for...um...other stuff...?)

Anyone who believed in the "Obama as Savior" crap deserves to be disapointed. Never has so much been promised and so little delivered.

But its not just liberal, conservative, etc. My mom remembers back when Nixon was elected for the first time (1968) and one of his platforms was "Bring the troops back home", the day after he won, a neighbor lady with a husband in Vietnam came running over to our house screaming that her husband was coming home! Thinking her friend had received a letter that her husband's tour was up early, my mom asked her how she found out. The neighbor looked at my mother like she was crazy and said "Didn't you hear? Nixon was elected! He's bringing the troops home!"   She never understood why her husband was in Nam another two years.....

I think it's true people get the government they deserve....
