Just like the stock market we need to watch what happens over the next few weeks and then compare it to the pre-boycott weeks.

Only then can you positively state that the boycott was a success or failure.

Just my thoughts.

In the realm of publicity, I think the boycott immensely succeeded...none of the previous boycott's generated the media coverage or diehards that this one has. I suspect it's a case of "end of the rope" syndrome for many sellers with the current state of the economy adding up to a frustration willing to motivate people far more than previous policy changes or fee increases.

The the realm of anything actually happening, I'd have to say changes won't come. The new CEO has made this entire change the backbone of his new philosophy of where he wants ebay to go, and the board of directors and shareholders are going to give the guy plenty of rope. If numbers are down and out a year from now, yeh you might see a desparate change. But a slight drop in weekly revenue? Slight drop in stock price when the entire Dow is having problems? only a month after the guy took the job? I just don't see it happening.  The powers that be are going to give the guy a chance to sink or swim with his plan before pulling the plug. I have to say, though, unless he IMMEDIATELY improves revenue, stock share, and the bottom line he's off to a horrendous start that does not bode well in a year that promises to skirt a recession just barely.

Well I'm having a great time selling direct. Several buyers who were watching my items have contacted me since I dropped all my listings and closed the shop. Now I can offer them free shipping as I don't have to cover the eBay fees. That said, without eBay none of them would have known I existed so direct selling success is likely to be very short term.

Just opened my first two non-payment disputes. Previously I always took the time to contact the buyer and sort things out, now I'm not taking the risk considering all the cards are in the hands of the buyers. That means I'll probably get a lot of negs and I couldn't care less. eBay will see a lot of unintended side effects from their changes - sellers with a harder attitude will be one. It's really rich - sellers are expected to bend over backwards and maintain their stars whilst buyers feel they can bid and then just not pay until they fancy - not even an email explaining the problem. And then they pay by eCheque! When you go to the dispute screen eBay urges the seller to contact the buyer and see if things can be sorted without dispute. WHY? Isn't it the obligation of the buyer to pay within terms? Why should I chase? My responsibility is to deliver in described condition and on time and I'll always do that. So from now on, anyone who doesn't pay within terms will get a dispute opened against them and blocked. Fight fire with fire.

I totally agree! If you can bid on ebay then as I'm concerned that means you can read. If someone makes an agreement to pay by a certain time then you should.

In the last week, I've had a couple of very low rated (one zero) feedback bidders who haven't paid for items yet(expensive items also) despite numerous invoices.  Isn't it time we start our post-ebay changes "Block These Bidders" thread to protect Acaeum sellers against this nonsense?

Is anyone toying with idea of making their auctions Paypal-only?  With the feedback changes, I'm becoming more worried about bounced checks and fraudulent money orders.

I wouldn't worry.  I've been selling on line 14 years, and my ratio of bad checks (never had a bad MO) to chargebacks or people who simply ignore paying their paypal bills is about 100 to one. I haven't even had a bad check in about a decade!  I'm far more worried about the zero or low feedback rated bidder who simply ignores paying, figuring that due to ebay's feedback changes he doesn't have to worry about a thing when it comes to whether he might pay or not.

Bad checks land people in jail, not to mention ruining credit. It doesn't happen nearly as often as it used to.

This is a question about Ebay policy, but on a slightly different subject. For about 3 days now all Australian listings have confidential bidding. So even items that have three bids and are at $2.50 do not show the bidders name. Is this happening everywhere and part of the overall changes?

I've noticed that on a couple of Australian auctions I'm watching.

At first I thought it was just that the bidder had put in a massive first bid and eBay had done the hiding bidder ID early, but he then got outbid $2 later so...

I'll have to check out a few other post-change items I'm watching, as I know items listed before the change definitely don't have that going on.

In November 2006 eBay launched the Safeguarding Members' IDs project on eBay.com.au for auction-style listings of $250 or more.
This initiative, which replaced bidders' IDs with aliases (such as Bidder 1, Bidder 2 and Bidder 3), helped combat attempts of fraud such as fake Second Chance Offers.

The changes to the way members' IDs are displayed in auctions proved successful on higher priced listings, in fact the volume of fake Second Chance Offers on items of $250 or more has dropped significantly since the introduction of this feature. Despite all efforts, fraudsters have adjusted their methods and now target bidders of less expensive items with fake Second Chance Offer emails.

In an effort to make eBay an even safer place to buy and sell, Safeguarding Members' IDs has been expanded to include ALL auction-style listings regardless of the item price.

This change will take effect Friday 22 February

While I appreciate the reasons behind it, all I have to say about it is: shilling ahoy!

That is quite a change. I wonder if other country Ebays will follow suit?

The cynic in me figures this is just a way for eBay to put a lid on all the unofficial second chance offers that surely must go on following the conclusion of particularly successful auctions. I'm starting to find that if you simply think the worst of eBay you're not far from the truth. I mean, how much more do they need to protect the buyer? What's up with the buyer, why all the cotton wool?

I dont understand why Ebay just doesnt drop the "Second Chance" offer entirely?  That way everyone will know that if they get one it isn't legitimate.  Seems it would fix their problem without having to resort to removing the ID's altogether.  Not only does it allow for unscrupulous sellers to shill their own auctions but it also takes away from some of the competitiveness....at least for me anyway.  I like to know who I am bidding against.  Helps me to formulate my bidding strategy.  Do I drop a high proxy bid early in the auction or do I wait to snipe at the last second?  Do I even have a chance to win based on who is bidding on the auction?

On the other hand, it will also help to prevent "retaliatory bidding".  Which is what I call it when someone bids up the price on a common item just because someone else outbid them on another item.  Not that something like that happens very often I'm sure.

Regardless it just shows how stupid the idiots that make policy for Ebay really are.
