Actually, I've read the 3.5 Dummies book. Or rather large parts of it. It may be helpful to some extent, but it's pretty basic and probably not very helpful if you are already a seasoned gamer. There's a few good tips in it, but it's really more aimed at folks who've never played RPGs at all and need a crash course in roleplaying and D&D in general rather than being a specific primer on 3.5.

Just like 1st Ed, the best way to pick it up is to play with somebody experienced. Barring that, as far as learning, it's not that difficult a system. It's more or less intuitive. It can sound a bit complicated while you're reading the books, but everything makes sense at the table when you're actually playing.

On that note, one of our campaigns just started using 4th Ed, and I'm honestly having trouble picking that up. Maybe I'm getting too old or something, but 4th Ed seems needlessly complicated to me. And while I'm in bitter Grognard mode, I'll also add that the rulebook isn't all that helpfully written or indexed.

Please, just because you got a new QB doesn't mean crap. The only thing the Bears will have to look forward to this year is having a better record then Detroit :wink:

4th Edition is actually quite easy, since it's a stripped-down bastardized version of 3.5. :cry:

But the commonality between the two is simple - All numbers add up.

The new Star Trek movie is quite good. A hearty recommendation from me.

absolutely. i saw the advance screening of it on thursday night over here. an excellent film. great acting and superb special effects.

the steal of the film for me was Karl Urban playing Bones. he was amazing.

agrees with Ben.... thoroughly recommend a watch on the big screen. its well worth it. i look forward to them doing another (if they do)....

Saw it on Sunday (May 10) and I loved it, thought it was the best one since Wrath of Kahn.......

It was a good movie. Didnt feel like Star Trek to me though. There were a few things that just didnt sit right with me...and I wont spoil them for others that havent seen it yet. Still....it was a lot of fun and I would see it again.

i watched the advance screening of it. quite honestly i thought it was superb and most enjoyable. i have never been what you would call a die-hard-trekkie, but frankly, i enjoyed the film generally, i liked the build up, the acting was excellent and the effects were top-notch.

i always like a new spin on an old concept and i think they got it spot-on.

i would definately invite a new sequel for sure.

personally i didnt think there was anything wrong with the film

I enjoy reboots and remakes. when they are well done and add something to the mix (aka the new James Bond films), so I liked the movie quite a bit. I thought most of the casting was spot on, especially Kirk, Spock and Bones (and if you get the trio correct, you are doing ok). The story was servicible but suffered from "Introduction story" syndrome; I think a 2nd and 3rd movie have the potential to be MUCH better and let the writers stretch their imaginations a little more (aka bring on the Klingons!!!!). The special effects/CGI is great, except for the old codger that would rather see the original crew stumble around a cardboard cutout and bump into walls that moved because it was more "authentic"....sheesh.

I may be a bastard, but what makes me laugh are all the die hards that are weeping, whining and crying because the reboot has decided to rewrite canon (quite dramatically in a few places). Screw 'em. They still have their 40 year old original series and all the movies made after to watch; time to move into a new century and try to snag a new fan base. Hell, my wife knows zero about Star Trek and isn't a SF fan, and loved the movie. Kids born in 1990 who only know the OST crew as wrinkled, flabby old men now have new heroes to follow. And who knows, the new movie may get them into the video stores hunting up the old series.

Anyway, I thought the ironic parallels between fans of Original Star Trek and New Star Trek vis a vis fans of the different versions of D&D is quite interesting....

Since the timeline has been changed and Kirk hasnt met up with Khan yet, maybe this will spur them to do a movie where Kirk finds Khan floating through space in a sleeper ship and decides to wake him up. When Khan freaks out and tries to kill Kirk and his crew, Kirk kicks him in the balls and pushes him out an airlock. End of Khan. That is until later in the movie when the Earth is attacked by a cylindrical probe making strange noises. But wouldnt Jean-Claude Van Damme go back in time and make sure that those events never happened? He is a "timecop" after all? :roll:
