Mister Yuk wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:That is the course taken by today's activists (and anti-activists). Particular to my time, we knew the failures of depending on a majority (May '68 forefront) and would work directly with whomever could influence. Like say Bono of U2 does, working with Orgs and Governments to distribute money (including taxpayer's) to Causes with little public intervention. Kids today know they'll be under a microscope if they end up in the public eye from being successful or infamous. You can't be a rock star and beat underaged groupies any more, they'll crucify you. I think they have a different way of looking at it though. It's not what we think, it's what they think. They see more screwed up stuff in the world than we did, you'd have to think they see the world differently.Going for money though. For most people, the money is easier to work with buying influence than being a great "talker" or organizer. You can't legally buy votes, but you can hire people to sign up voters and many other things to cause or force change. Like if Small Businesses want better representation, they need to get together, hammer out some things they agree would help them and hire lobbyists if that what it takes. It's not much different for people, just easier to do nothing and deal with the day's mess.

sauromatian wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:If all you have to eat is low-quality food, then you've got to eat a lot of it. The more generous that welfare benefits are in various regions of the US, the harder they are to get. This was a fact easy to ignore before the pandemic, but now the news is filled with the stories of people caught in a bureaucracy designed to trip them up. The alternative is to wait hours in line at charity food banks, something not always possible if you have a demanding work schedule, lack of transportation, or your time is devoted to childcare. Neither is it always possible for a single working parent to have the time to prepare meals from fresh food in any event. So buying cheap junk food is not always easy to avoid, & poverty might make regular exercise difficult as well.

sauromatian wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:That is often the decision of one's boss. These days, employers are pushing more & more to keep us firmly planted in our home offices, where we will go further out of shape.

mbassoc2003 wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:Tell me about it. I’m meant to be getting up an trying to walk every half hour, but one has work to do and I have to be in front of a laptop with my mobile if it rings. Nonetheless, my boss does not control the calories I consume, nor what I do after the working day is done. So if I’m a bone idle F and end up obese, then that’s not oppression from a boss, or endemic racism in society. It’s my own F’ing fault.
sauromatian wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:Now you've convinced me. When I finish work, I step over to the mind-body teleport machine, where my consciousness is made incarnate within my after-work body. This particular meat suit is not tired or creaky from a day sitting at a desk, & so is ready for hours of exercise & healthy cooking. It takes a few stretches of logic to agree with you when you seem to change sides every few sentences, but the insights are deeply rewarding.
mbassoc2003 wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:Back to an old topic... Anyone know what's supposed to be happening with the new Dune movie, and what they're going to do if cinemas are closed around the world?I'd pay extra for a one off screening on a streaming service, but I don't think I'd sign up for a years subscription to a satellite package to see it. Maybe Netflix or similar should offer a premium service over and above their regular service on a ticket by ticket basis and start screening new releases. I don't see cinemas returning in the UK for years (not that I can get to one), but its the first film I've looked forward to in a long while.
