Just found this hilarious blog where everything is expressed from the perspective of a Drow character. Apparently today's modern politically aware Drow see everything through a fringe-leftwing haze, with their mortal enemies being "anti-feminist men." Maybe that's the way Drow see the incursions of Human PCs into their subterranean realm.

Why do we bother to create fictional worlds when real people are so much more bizarre?

I was wondering why D&D was prevented by Tolkien Enterprises from using Hobbits and Ents as creature names, yet they were allowed to use Orcs?  I thought Tolkien invented orcs..

Then I found this definition of Orcs on the World Wide Web!

"Orc" has four root meanings depending on language:

Latin:  Death (as in Orcus lord of the dead or killer whale Orcinus Orca...which might mean "seal killer"   )
Old English: Ogre
Old Norse:  Seal
Old French:  Pig  (as in pork)

The topic gets discussed online in several places.  

For one example, do an internet search on why/how the Orkney Islands got their name.  The obvious answer would be that the Norse named them the "Seal Islands" except that the name long pre-dates the Norse.  The Romans may have called them the Orchaedes (or some variant of that) because of the large number of ancient tombs on those islands.

The term was used in literature long before Tolkien.  Tolkien seems to have been using the Germanic (Old English) root meaning of the word.

There has been some confusion about its root meaning because writers have used Orc as a character name...obviously in the role of an ogre...and then made it an inside joke by giving the character pig-like qualities.

The pig-snout orcs of OD&D, as well as the pig-like goblins in movies like Sleeping Beauty, are other examples of the mixing of the meaning of "orc."

In my own Arthurian campaign, the Ochaedes are a dark realm, ruled by mean people like Orcus and his minions.
