Higher.  They typically go for around $300 in SW.

Well, I guess it was a matter of time before this happened:

** expired/removed eBay auction **

At least the seller indicated "Box was missing so I had a box professionally manufactured that is as nearly identical to the original Wood Grain as possible. Also used stickers to make the labels, just like the original. This is a very close facsimile. This is not an original wood grain set."

So, supposedly 5th print books in a fake 1st Alpha/Beta woodgrain box. Hmm. Not good. Looks like a potential problem emerging. Would like to know how/where this was produced.

Was just about to post this myself. Years ago someone popped up here on the forums claiming they could make a passable facsimile of the wood grain box. Sure enough, it's happened (not claiming this is that person).

Looks like the auction bot also posted it in the classifieds.

The box looks pretty good from the pictures.

Not good from the standpoint that it's not the most straightforward auction.  It states "Original Dungeons & Dragons Set with a Wood Grain Box"

That's deceptive, and could lure in unsuspecting bidders to paying a lot of money for fairly inexpensive original books.

Seller is from Fancy Gap VA.  Isn't that where Shewolf is from?

Nice catch!  Our favorite seller morphs again.  I've added him to the block list.

(Besides Fancy Gap having like five people, the capitalization and exclamation points in the title is a DEAD GIVEAWAY!!)

Foul

Hi Abschuss, based on your profile image, I am assuming you're the seller of this item?  If so,  congratulations - this item surprised me!

I searched through the forum history and noticed there is a lot of history of fraudulent buckles. How should someone verify one of these?

On rereading my post,  it struck me that it might appear that I am questioning your auction's authenticity - not my intention at all!

I'm asking because I believe yours to be the real deal,. (Plus,  it appears many people agree.)  I just want to know what to look for in the future.

This is also in Class 3 Rare Auctions, but it’s so sweet I thought it deserved more pub.  I can’t recall seeing one this nice, I hope someone can give it a nice home :)

I draw the line at collecting... D&D beach towels.

Having the provenance would be best, but in the absence of provenance, the condition and similarity to other known examples is what you would rely on.

In this example, the buckles features, coupled with the wear and patina/aging, are consistent with an authentic original.

The seller has been around a long time too, and is known for selling items from this collecting realm.

The counterfeit belt buckles were fairly obvious, as they looked brand new, had some telltale signs of being created from an original, and at least one seller eventually confessed that they were reproductions.
