Honestly though, if you want some really good D&D movies and shows (and I use this term in the sense of "if you like D&D then this movie might appeal to you") here's my list. IMHO and YMMV and all that.*

In the Name of the King - A Dungeon Siege Tale . This is just fun. And it has some surprisingly big names hiding in it. I'll spoil one: Ray Liotta!

Mythica Movie Series: There are five of these. First movie to start with is "A Quest For Heroes." Really pretty good.

The Gamers - Fun home made movie about playing D&D, completely self made by a bunch of guys having fun.

The Gamers - Dorkness Rising - Same guys made a sequel, but with more financial backing and production value. This is one of my favorites.

The Gamers - Hands of Fate - Sequal to Dorkness, but focuses on CCGs more than RPGs. I like this on alot too.

Wrath of the Dragon God - Yes, this is one of the infamous D&D "licensed" movies. But I think it gets a bad rap and gets unfairly lumped in with the other weak attempts in this series. It's really not bad at all.

Game of Thrones - This speaks for itself. As far as being a D&D related work, I know some of you will agree and some of you will throw this out on its head. YMMV

The Witcher - This IS a de facto D&D TV Show, whether it wants to be or not. And it's good.

Knights of Badassdom - If you haven't seen this, watch it. It's alot of fun. More about LARP than RPG. It's like LARP meets Heavy Metal meets D&D meets Buddy Comedy/Horror/Slasher film. And Tyrion is in it, so there's that.

Probably a lot more I could think of if I gave it some thought, but these are a good start.

Not a surprise, but I always thought Conan the Barbarian perfectly captured the tone of d&d. Thought a lot of the newer films (lotr etc.) took things way too seriously.

I would consider Your Highness a D&D movie that definitely didn't take things too serious.

Krull... Nice. More of a sci-fy romp if i recall correctly. Strange the only thing I remember from the film is its very end where a guy is killing the crap out of some beast with his flamethrower hand. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad. PDT_Armataz_01_05

I seem to remember a movie called The Beastmaster of some such thing around the time of Krul.
Also Ivanhoe was a pretty good movie for its time. Arthurian of course, not D&Desque.
I don't recall ever seeing Conan through to the end.

I know Excalibur isn't the most D&D movie ever but we loved it.

Probably fortunate that nobody mentions movies like Deathstalker 2. But the bar scene in One or Two, that kind of became D&D Canon outside of my main group. Just awful movies though. The Italian mythology stuff was pretty bad but better than stuff that came later.

I'll tell you though, we were so much more obsessed with incorporating aspects of movies outside of fantasy into the game.

I thought about Hawk the Slayer for my movie list. But I was trying to avoid the really obvious "goes without saying" ones that everybody already knows, like Hawk and LoTR, etc.

I love Conan. I read all the paperback books in HS and saw the 80s movies. And - though I know this is probably going earn me a bit of hater-ade here - in my mind Conan's world was too "low magic" to be a D&D type milieu. *ducks*

Beastmaster is awesome, but I figured it counted with the first group above, IE anybody who's been a gamer for any length of time has seen it for sure. BTW I remember back in the eighties during the summer HBO used to run Beastmaster continuously. Back then HBO stood for "Hey, Beastmaster's On!

I feel like Krull is more of a Sci Fi movie than Swords and Sorcery. *ducks again*

Krull was one of those weird movies, and I don't differentiate so much SciFi personally. S3 had been out and huge well before I started playing. So it's D&D enough for me.

It's one of those movies that I like a lot more now than back then, or maybe respect more. It's a cool flick, and even better trying to draw inspiration from.

Fair assessment?

I was sad to hear of John Le Carre's passing, I love his books. Although happily, he kept writing long after he said he would stop. Anyway I read a few obits and the best (or one of the best) is this in the New Yorker which I thought I might share.

Yikes. Real world too sad, back to fantasy world for me, where the orcs are easier to kill.

That is impossible to avoid when you close all the businesses that have customer facing (low paid) jobs because of a pandemic. If we aren't going to hairdressers, restaurants, cinemas, gyms and Burger King, inevitably we don't need people to stand around in them anymore. The real question is, when everyone in the whole world now knows we are heading towards mass unemployment in certain sectors, why are the majority of people just sitting around and not actively moving towards new employment sectors? It is not a case that people have ceased eating, exercising, grooming, or entertaining themselves. It is simple a case that the demand has moved elsewhere. A simple Google search will throw up endless discussion and the rationale behind them speculating as to where future growth and employment success lies ahead of us. It doesn't take a genius to plan ahead, but sure as hell only 4 in 100 will think ahead, and the other 96 will play the 'woe is me' card when they face change in their sectors.

I hadn't been paying attention, but in the UK over the past two decades we have moved from an education for all over to a let's sell everyone a degree for £30K model. You used to be able to get a get through university with a weekend job and hard work in the holidays selling Christmas trees or working in a garage, and you'd leave with zero debt. Nowadays your average student leaves after 4 years with more than £50K in debt. So the US model of 'f"ck the kids before they're old enough to understand debt' has been rolled out with full force in the UK too.

Ironically, all the kids go and sign on to a life of debt, and the majority leave with little hope of having improved their employment prospects and little hope of freeing themselves from debt or ever owning their own home before they're 65. Why? Just because their parents tell them to? Or because their friends tell them to? Who knows, but so many of them are destined to live at or below the 27K level, which they could have done by saving themselves £50K in debt and working in a supermarket for 4 years.

So (and I know this is a broad brush generalisation) we have one generation who not only are failing to predict and adapt to the future, but are telling their children to prepare for a future that all the evidence already shows is not going to exist in the way the older generation think. All contrary to countless data points telling us otherwise, and in a world where data can be checked and corroborated with greater accuracy, by the man in the street, like never before.

It appears that with greater freedom, has come greater bone idleness and ignorance by the masses. Who would have predicted that?
