Oh no. I paid for every dime of my university education. I even joined the Army to get through it. When you, the student, are actually paying all the bills you are very aware of what you get for your dollar. And when you get some nutcase teacher who has a certain agenda, you just want a refund. And I had more than a couple wack jobs. I don't want to hear about learning all sides, either. That was not the case in any shape or form. Also, it was always the "required" course that had these professors of balance.
And then to see students who benefited from certain government sponsorship programs party the semester away because they knew they weren't coming back the next year was great, too.

And I could've bought these damn modules off the 1$ rack!!!

I assume barsh is referring to the students, you know, as in when George W. Bush was a university student.

Yes, some students. But also professors. Citing Cuba as the model the world needed to follow...that kind of thing.

Wow and still trying to bash Bush. I never met W in college so I can't really comment on what kind of student he was. None of my business either, for that matter. Neither is Clinton's or Obama's. I'll just leave the personal destruction to those who have that fixation.

Like bbarsh, I paid every dime (still paying: less than $2000 to go) of my college cost (tuition, room and board) over $100,000. And I agree that when you are paying the bills you are very consious of what your getting in return. I did not run into to many political wak jobs but that would not have stopped me from learning the material for the course. As to what kind of student our present and past president should be, I do require that my president be smarter than I am. In my opinion, only Bush (Jr.) and Carter did not meet that requirement.

I factored in extra hours for paper-grading and whatnot. A yearly salary, if they were employed for 12 months, would be around $55K. Average.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

You must be one smart dude. I know it is somehow fashionable to believe W is some kind of idiot. Fact is he went to and graduated from an Ivy league school. Carter is also a very smart man and well-educated. I probably disagree with him on everything. That is policy, not intelligence.

While in the Army I took two classes from Yale. Nailed A's in both classes (both were in Psycology) I am not impressed just because it is an Ivy League School. Your are correct W did learn to fly a jet. Opinion is still out on whether he was a good pilot or something else. But I do know that he had very little Flight time logged during his short stint in the Guard.

Well for those of you that paid for school out of your own pocket, I feel for you. But please dont make the assumption that the people that did not have to do so were any less aware of what we were putting into or getting out of our "free" education.

I couldnt get a student loan so ended up going to school on a federal grant and scholarship because at the time I graduated high school my parents were divorced, my father was not paying for anything, and my mother was working two jobs just to put food on the table. Soon after I started college my mother also went to school to get a respiratory therapy degree. Not only did she have to go to school full time but she also had to work in the hospital with no pay while she was attending school as part of her "residency". I had to keep a 2.0 GPA to keep my grant (ok....it's not that hard I know) and a 3.0 GPA to keep my scholarship (that paid for my books only) and take a full load of classes. Plus I was working 30 hours a week to keep gas in my pile of crap car and pay for the cheapest beer available.

I may not have been "paying my own way" so to speak, but I was well aware of who was paying for it and I was not about to just coast through college because it wasn't my dollar that was paying for it.

I am not saying W is some sort of closet genius. But people in general sometimes give way too little credit or way too much. Graduating from any college is an accomplishment - and I have to believe an Ivy League school might have higher demands that some others. As far as the pilot thing goes, he went through flight school and actually flew jets. Way too many people want to gloss that over...that is not an easy task.
But I don't want to sucked into a W discussion. I have plenty of issues with some of his policies...
I just wonder why there is so much W hatred around. It is really very bizarre.

I may have misrepresented myself. I, too, like you received federal grant money. And I payed the difference by using the GI Bill, loans, and a job. But as I did go to a private college I did notice that the "rich kids" did not have the same concern for where the money comes from as I did. And I did notice a certain attitude from the Kids who were going to college compelety on the Taxpayers backs.

Cannot agree with you that graduating from any college is an accomplishment. Quincy University (the private school I went to) had a program called "Communications" and it was for our athletes who did not have a chance of graduating Quincy any other way. College is what the student makes of it.

Does anyone here read Kobold Quarterly? I picked up a print copy of Issue 8 today (Winter 2008-09) to see if it was worth buying in the future. The ads from different game companies and websites remind me of the wide array of ads that ran in old Dragon magazines.

What do y'all think of KQ? Is it extremely 3.x-specific, or can material be salvaged for any fantasy RPG? Does it cover science fiction, or is it always fantasy? Is it a house organ? Does it have any axes to grind?

I forgot about this mag entirely. Wasn't there Gygax material in the 1st issue?

Don't know. I assumed that KQ would be a very specialized or vanity-press magazine that pimped Wolfgang Baur and his products, but I was wrong. It may have had something from Gygax.

Gary Gygax wrote a column for The Crusader until his passing.

According the the Kobold Quarterly website, Issue 9 has an interview with Dave Arneson. The KQ website (http://www.koboldquarterly.com) has a short version of that interview.
