I can recommend new knees, I've had two and now it's just the rest of me that's worn out!

In the future, I imagine these sets being on par with the 10th anniversary ones.  The number of whole ones left have been decimated by L3's inclusion and i wonder if all 5,000 of them were actually sold.

Have 2 copes of L3 (one of which I picked up courtesy of a tip on here for $10) plus 2x sealed boxes. I had been thinking recently that they were worth, at most, £250-320~ that I paid for them.

And then there is the random sale at these values. I almost don't believe it.

There can be a lot of variation in the prices for these sets, especially between BIN and auction sales.  Your price range (~$320-400) is pretty close to what opened sets in FN-NM condition have been selling for the last four years.  SW copies can sell for about twice what opened versions sell for, so this sale price is higher but not too far off from many of the SW sales.

You are fortunate to have a couple in SW, as they will almost assuredly increase in value more than opened copies over time, as fewer and fewer shrink-wrapped ones are available.  The sale prices for shrink-wrapped copies were not that much higher than opened copies for a while, but the gap appears to be widening now.

If you have one of the 1,000 that included the signed print, you are fortunate indeed.  There was a period of time when those could sometimes be picked up for close to the same price as the standard sets, but it's doubtful that will happen much anymore unless a seller doesn't know what they have when they list it.

Tszii, people will pay for quality.  The items you listed are not exceptional and estimates put the probable figure above 1M B2s that have been printed. So they are essentially a dime a dozen.

I find it funny. Most collectibles have those one or two items that are almost always worthless unless it's a rare variation. Atari 2600 Combat and Pac-Man come to mind. I'm very involved with vintage video game systems and created a website on Atari variations (was supposed to have other systems) and did a lot of research on rarity. So B2 may be common, but I'm sure the later printings may be rare, or possibly even the first. Who knows how many are out there?

This is very true Phil.  My only 'collectible' copy of B2 is a 5th print.  Although I haven't looked at B2s in a very long time, I imagine they are difficult to find in a very good and above state. Back then, pretty much everyone learning D&D played through this module.

If you follow the video game market at all, you will see certain variations of even common games will sell for 10-50x higher than the most common. You do have to find that niche collector though who actually wants them. I did a lot of research over the past 30 years on the Atari 2600 games. I've come across variations where I've only seen it once online or even had the luck of having the only known boxed or sealed copy come into my hands. I did tons of research on gaming sites along with auction sites. Once the video game grading craze came along, it allowed more trackability on rarity. The Nintendo games from the original and on with the other systems was very well known with WATA founders and graders. I went to Deniz house and he had a massive collection. So they pretty much knew what cart went with what box. With Atari, there are more cartridge variations than there are boxes and manuals. My guess is they changed the cart but used older boxes, then eventually changed the box. Then they changed the carts again and used old boxes.

Like i mentioned about Combat being the most common cartridge. There are 28 documented cartridge variations. I have only 15 documented box variations. There may be a couple of very minor box variations that I ignore sometimes, so it may go up one or two, but not nearly the difference amounts between cart and box. Certain variations will match based on the year, or what is known to have been packed together. But not having a huge supply of sealed games to "open" and confirm contents with box, sometimes it's a guessing game.
