I can second to having lots of problems sending from the UK.  I have 7 recent buyers logging disputes for non-arrived items.  I fully expect paypal to side with them (even though all but 2 having tracking information) and lose over £250.  If I am lucky the parcels will eventually arrive and the buyer will be honest enough to recomplete payment, but I may be living in hopes there.

Hi,

of course, what Ian is saying is his opinion, not actual facts.

Personally, I do not agree with him.

"really need to be hiring based on a minimum intelligence level, and not employing people who have broken the law"

I am guessing that all stupid people, and those who have served their time in prison, need to be euthanised - given that apparently they should not be allowed to work, or live off the state.

I'm sorry, but I don't want a discussion with some fascist. Go and play Hitler with your mates elsewhere.

Cheers,
Malc

Hi,

I would reckon that if the parcels have been missing for more than 4 weeks then they will never turn up, or else turn up in about 6 months, which amounts to the same thing for your purposes.

Its mostly the stuff that came in at the beginning of the strikes thats the problem - it is just sitting in a warehouse somewhere and will probs not be sorted for months, if at all.

At the moment, its just being a bit delayed - when London is Out, then the mail is being taken to surrounding depots to be sorted.

However, when it becomes all-out, I would strongly recommend not posting anything.

Cheers,
Malc

The packages will eventually arrive. The actual loss rate, and even the damaged in transit rates are very low in the UK mail system. Items lost tend to be small packages and mail from nown electronic acrd issuing companies, and damaged mail tends in a large part to be the fault of the sender not packaging sufficiently.

Your problem is that if a package is delivered in eight weeks time, you are entitiled to £5 in stamps by way of compensation from the Royal Mail, but the buyer is entitled to a full refund from you through PayPal, and PayPal will not compensate you in any way for your losses, because you chose to deliver with a service that did not perform, and you did not have sufficient insurances to cover such a loss.

So, yes, if they claim their money back and do not repay, you have no recourse and you lose your money. You may be surprised at how many people will not pay you even once tracking proves it has been delivered.

As for US sellers, you face the same problem. If your item comes into the UK and is not received for eight weeks, the buyer can get a full refund through PayPal, has no onligation to repay after the item turns up, and any compansation or insurance is between you, PayPal and the USPS.

I am told that even during industrial action the Royal Mail still manage to achieve delivery of 80% within 8 weeks, but this data is not current, and probably not accurate.

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Malc,

You have the privelige of running your own company and personally selecting your employees. If you interview people, I presume you take on board the individual's intelligence levels and criminal past. Everyone in the UK selects employees based on all availabel criteria, and everyone has their own levels below wich they are not prepared to go.

For example, banks have higher requirements with regard to intelligence and criminality for their tellers, than security companies do for their bouncers. What I am saying is that the post office should aim to set it's standards in line with bank teller staff and not bouncers.

That's not fascism, bigotry, racism, or whatever you care to label it. It is basic customer service and good business sense. The same way you exercise control over those people you employ. Why should I or you, the police, the fire service, or any other company that deals with the public, not have minimun standards to which staff must perform?

Personally I have a fantastic trio of post men. I enjoy talking to them, have known two of them now for 10 years, and wouldn't want to change them. They take good care of my mail. But I have enough experience of the system and the way it works to know that these individuals are only representative of maybe 50% of staff. I'm sure you have similar relationships with your postal staff. Expecting high standards of an entire organisation's staff is not fascist. It's called capitalism.

Back on topic...

As an established mail order business and a relatively heavy user of the mail service, what do you recommend people do, and what are you planning on doing to safeguard your interests during these troubled times?

Of couse, accepting postal orders and cheques is a decent safeguard, but eBay will not allow you do stipulate that in an auction.

I'm pleased to say that upon checking my feedback earlier today, an item I posted a week last monday arrived in Virginia.
I'm still waiting on some feedback for some items though, so I hope they arrived! I guess that some people just don't leave it.

Was that item sent airmail? I posted a parcel from London to the USA by surface mail around August 25th. I was told it would take around three weeks. The buyer's still waiting.

And this, presumably, is just a byproduct of so-called 'local strike action' we've had to date.

Thanks for letting us know what is up, guys. I was only dimly aware of a UK postal strike and this explains why some of my packages have taken so long to arrive. Today I am sitting on three separae orders of over $60 each and wondering if I should even send them seeing as they probably have little chance of arriving before being delayed. I have emailed all three buyers and explained the situation, but as stated I still have no recourse in event of their charging back on paypal. I have offered all three buyers a refund or told them they may have to wait 4-8 weeks for arrival. Only one has posted and he said he understands the situation, but even then, he could still always charge back. I'm going to trust a bit in human nature here since I've rarely been disappointed by RPG  buyers except for the odd lunatic now and then...

Should I buy insurance for all three packages?  I'm wondering what the conditions are I will get refunded if it doesn't arrive in a decent amount of time (say, 4 weeks).  I figure this is the least I can do to cover myself so I'm going to do it.  This is really too bad as now I will have to tell potential UK buyers not to bother, and those that do purchase something willl probably get an immediate refund with a email of explanation.

Mike

You may find that the items arrive ok, it depends on where they go through and if the all-out strike happens.

I've today received an item from gyg which was posted earlier this week.

It didn't go through London so it seems to be ok in that respect. I've also received other mail today that has a postmark from Wednesday.

I think it's going to be a case of chance if you do post but most likely you will be better off avoiding London (which I know is a problem area) or trying to use a different postal delivery service.

By all accounts Amazon, Play and other online retailers are already lining up new delivery services to avoid the Royal Mail. With the run-up to Xmas starting for purchases and posting, that will hit Royal Mail massively in the pocket.

FYI, this temporary freeze on UK buyers leaving poor DSR for late received items only currently applies to items sent by UK sellers. If you're a US seller shipping to the UK, UK buyers can still leave you a 1 for late delivery.

It has been reported, rightly or wrongly, that Amazon is the UK's second largest single user of the Royal Mail, and they have left Royal Mail having closed a deal with an alternate supplier.

I am sure that RM don't really nned to care about the loss of that tens of millions of poinds a year, because the goverment will pay the shortfall. But that's the whole problem that is endemic in that institution. They do't need to care about the customer or the service because there are no consequences for not providing a service.

I am not aware of any insurance package in the UK that covers chargeback/delayed mail. The RM will give you a book of stamps and a polite GFY.

Work Around

Apparently if you ship from the US using Global Express instead of Global Priority the packages are routed through Parcel Force  intead of the Royal Mail and there is currently no intention for Parcel Force staff to strike in simpathy. So it may be a more expensive ortion, but it comes with insurance and tracking, and will get through the strikes.

Same goes for UK sellers. Ship Parcel Force and you will avoid the strikes at the current time. I'll post more info as and when I get it.

Yes, it was sent airmail.
One package I sent to the USA surface mail around the time you did still hasn't arrived.

About a month ago, a post office worker told me that airmail should take about 5 days to the states, and surface mail can take up to 12 weeks, although they aim for 6!

That estimate for surface is pretty much on the button.

Well, I contacted all three of my latest UK buyers, and they all got back to me. They were very nice and realized the problem, and said they would just wait until the items got in. They seem very resigned to the trouble and one guy mentioned something along the lines of "Royal Mail sucks normally anyway so this will only be a little worse".

Absolute b*llocks.

One of the guys we employ is thick as 2 short planks.

But do I care if he knows the capital of Cuba or not? No, I don't.
He has specialist knowledge in a small area, and thats what matters to me.

And frankly, being able to shove a letter thru a letterbox doesnt require a First from oxford. Of course, YOUR letters might be different.
