I think the $10 was just one of those things that happen on ebay. Especially with odd ball items. It isn't a well known set, it is definitely a fringe AD&D collectable since the diorama isn't scale for miniatures or anything but I also don't think it was too common. The right time and right buyers might have pushed it to a few times that.
The wood is probably okay. It sat in my game closest for the last ten years and probably came from a hobby store that closed down (they sent a bunch of their unsold stock to the local thrift shop, I picked up an entire display of metagaming microgames from there, but in the days before ebay was well known there were tons of finds at goodwils and thrift stores).
I'd guess that the glues and paints are probably useless, but you never know with sealed items.
