Just a King Eddie Magna?  Pfft.  More common than B2.

1) copyright - who owns the rights? Likely Wizards of the Coast; are there references to their properties in Domesday? Anything about Chainmail, OD&D? Greyhawk or Blackmoor (not a WotC property as far as I know)? What about the original art?

Pure speculation on my part, but I think the IP content in DB (sans art) is very likely not referential to currently-owned TMs of WotC.

serleran wrote:2) cost of print run - it'll take, likely, $20k just to get a full run, if it can be found. Half that is for "common" issues, and the other half for the first 4, if you're lucky. That means you'd have to sell 200 of them at $100 just to break even at cost to start to print, not even considering the actual print costs (probably another $3 - 5k) and marketing costs. So you're looking at roughly 500 copies sold to make it even close to being worthwhile, and then, just barely... now, if you happen to already own a complete run, then you're doing much better, of course, but I highly doubt anyone that has this set is going to want to release it generally.

If scans can be donated by the folks who own them already and/or gathered via such folks, this cost becomes zero.

serleran wrote:3) the above is just to purchase actual copies and has no estimate for buying rights to actually use them; that can get very expensive, depending on who and what. So, likely, tack on even more cost to get the rights to print, and you're looking at either upping costs (means less sold) or over-printing to save your hide and then being stuck with non-sells.

Figuring out the disposition of the rights to the DB contents may prove to be more difficult than finding the issues themselves; perhaps Paul Stormberg has some info here he can chime in with???

*nods*. Easy enough to remove those staples... *g*

Agreed. /That/ is the key hurdle, IMO, and needs to be pinned down 100% with all agreements.

With regards to sales pitch, a personal hypothetical starting-point as to what could be "tempting" might be say $19.95/$24.95 per "issue" with a few extra history pages (C&C Society and in the "bigger picture" context, serialised) along with a few extra articles, ad-hoc; all bundled with potential to sell 100.
If signed, possibly by a different "original member" (or members!) on each issue would be a good selling point and possibly help to direct some $ back to those who were there. How feasible that might be, I don't know, but worth throwing into the hat.

d.

It seems like the first step is gathering a simple index of articles and authors. these days, a dedicated group od internetters could probably chase down all the leads in relatively short order.

iirc, chainmail stuff is not wotc's. I think blackmoor has some agreement between wtoc and DA, but I'm not privvy to any details, being a complete outsider.

We know where the copies are. :)
(Not so much of a hunt, although I can't recall off-hand without re-checking as to whether there's any glitch in those runs).

How much that might impinge, I honestly don't know...

Hmm, I didn't know about the settlement in 2006. That'll make things tougher.

Well, if you or Paul, or you AND Paul (and Frank?) could put together a simple listing of articles and their authors, I think a lot of people would be able to be empowered to do more lifting in regards to finding people, contacting them, and doing legal legwork.

I don't know about anyone else, but especially since the passing of Gary and Bob, I've come to realize that preserving the legacy of the pasttime which has such a profound effect on who I am and what my life became is really important to me. I'm a busy man, but no so busy as to contribute time to an effort of preservation.

$500, yeah...

For better or worse, I'm a bit player on those. #7, #13 and a couple of spares for swaps is my limit. Already far too thinly spread elsewhere and insufficient resources to have bowled straight on in on those.
Most of the relevant names are on here or known to people on here but it's not up to me to put them on the spot, sorry; much though I can empathise with the reasons why.

:)

And, yes, agreed on those rather unwelcome time-reminders. :/
