lol!!! :)

now you realise why it was so funny :)

seroiusly though, it was only one of a number of cool little encounters.

the guys were great to DM too and it showed me once again, how much fun gaming really can be.

thanks Mike, Martin and John for such a blast.

Hey improvstone,

All my coworkers just came over to my office to see what I was laughing my ass off at.  Had to explain the whole thing.  Now if you can somehow get a Dwarf in that picture with his head place between Mike's cheeks you will have the full picture.

My stomack hurts, really, I'm not kidding.  Thats the funniest damn thing I've seen in years.

realistically tho...

this was a perfect example of how to use something so small to inflict mayhem on a group of characters who were 6th-9th level.

who needs big monsters? :)

mike....wait for next years adventure... "expedition into the ant colony"

Keep it stored in a sheet protector. Who knows in a few years you might be able to eBay it as an artifact from Gencon 40...  :P

Pretty much everything that we had come up against was seemingly small and insignificant except for the hill giant...and the lightning bolt pretty much took care of that.

Besides the giant shrew encounter there were several other memorable moments:

- Mike's laughable fear of fireplaces.  Every time we went into a room with a fireplace Mike would say "I'm not going anywhere near that damn thing, bad stuff always comes down the chimney".  We gave him such a hard time about it that he eventually checked two of them out.  Both times he was attacked by something.  The first time was a giant stag beetle.  The second (and last) time it was a 3-foot long snake that tried to bite him.  He didnt go near another one.

- Skeletons.  Twice we had encounters with skeletons.  The first time was in a huge banquet hall.  There were something like 20 of them sitting at a long table.  When we got close to the table they all got up and attacked us.  My cleric was only able to turn four of them so we had to hack and slash our way through the rest.  Didnt take too long for us to take them out.  However the second encounter was in a barracks room and the skeletons were laying on beds.  I wasnt going to take any chances so I immediately whacked the nearest one with my mace.  Its head exploded but so did the rotting mattress underneath.  Not only did we have to face off with the six other skeletons in the room but several buzzing giant gnats flew out of the mattress and made it even more of a pain in the ass.

- Mike hates stirges.  We found a nest of them in one room and Mike just didnt want to mess with them.  We had to go near the nest to get to the door to the next room though so two of them ended up swooping down and trying to latch on to us.  We were able to kill both of them pretty easily but Mike decided to make sure that they didnt bother us again.  After a couple of rounds stomping on the carcasses he was spattered with stirge blood.

- Phantoms and poltergeists.  We knew going into the adventure that Tegel Manor was pretty much a haunted house.  But the little nuances that Al used to make it actually frightening was what made it a lot of fun.  Every time we left a room and entered a hallway we heard laughing, whispering, crying, or phantom footsteps coming from somewhere.  And Al did a great job of making us nervous with all the floating and flying goblets, bowls, and candlesticks.  Mike and Martin tried poking at several pieces of floating crockery only to get attacked by animated urns that splattered poison on them when they broke against their armor.  I just sat back and shook my head while they kept doing it.  The empty boots following us around was a nice touch too.

I gave Mike a hard time at one point during the game for playing the exact opposite of his alignment.  So later when he needed me to heal his character I just shrugged and said "I'm not sure I should heal you as I dont believe that it would benefit your soul one bit."  Ahh...the joys of playing a true neutral character.  :)

At least there were no rot grubs....damn I hate rot grubs.

we just didnt get into the game enough to introduce them my friend :)

believe me i would have nudged a few moments in there to get the others grinning at you for a change, but alas it wasnt to be in the time frame that we had.

oh and i dont forget so you wait til next time

"expedition into the ant colony & their cousins the rot grubs" :)

just glad you all enjoyed it so much - i just had a heap of fun and it was just such a blast seeing experienced gamers having such fun with a 30 year old module and remembering how great a game truly can be - personally, i thought all round, it was role-playing at its best.

i really can't wait for next time.

right guys heres the low down:

GenCon 2008, the adventurers are going to have to return to Tegel Manor.

However, the whole area around Tegel has been blighted with evil. crops are dying, plantlife is dying, babies are still-born, dairy produce is all ruined. the party has been recruited to once again go into the Manor to find out what has happened. having successfully cleared the manor just a year before, rumours are now rife, that the current owners, dabbled very stupidly into arts that should have been left well alone.

upon discussing the matter with a local sage and other "gossip-mongers", you have found out, having patched all your information together, that some evil thing has once again taken root in the manor and you need to find out what has happened to the current owners. all the locals are petrified of the place and the land all around the manor is blackened and ruined. whatever has taken root there, is not pleasant and this time it looks as though you are going to have your work cut out!

a quick reccy to the manor, finds something very strange. the front of the manor looks as it did last time, but traversing around and examining other parts of it, you find that the walls shimmer slightly and glow an eerie colour. the other disconcerting factor, is that it looks as though a large portion of the manor has sunk into the ground. where the manor walls meet the ground, a blinding line of white light can be seen!

this can be nothing good!

finding this, you return to the sage to discuss what you have found. upon returning there, you find he is sat with a mage from the nearby city. upon being introduced, you find that there is more to this matter! you are told that whatever is in the manor, has managed to obtain one of the lost orbs of power. these items of great power, once unlocked, give the wielder, the power to traverse between dimensions. once unlocked though, the orbs are very unstable and can have devastating side-effects. it needs to be either destroyed or returned, to once again be locked away safely.

upon relaying your information, you are also told that it sounds like the manor has already began to sink into another space/time/dimension and you must hurry there and recover the orb. if the orb is allowed to reach it full level of power, it could mean the end of the world, so time is of the essence!

can you help? are you prepared to take the risk? only hardy-adventurers need come forward, as death is a likely outcome. all who have been sent so far, have not returned and can only assume they have met some grisly end.

the game will be for 5 players and their levels will be 10-14.

let the game begin!

3 places are already filled, providing they go. i will definately be going! bar for a little buying and the rares auctions, my time this time around will be spent DMing this game.

are you interested?

:)

Al
