If you intend to stay downtown, in walking distance to the center - January, I believe. If you plan to rent a car and stay further out, you can be later than that.

For first timers - and first timers spending a lot of money to come - I strongly recommend spending time at the GenCon forums and reading and asking things there.

Less than five days to the Acaeum dinner, and the launch of Gen Con! :cheers:

Finally got all of the items I'm selling at the auction loaded in to the website, labels printed and packed. Good thing, as the online system shuts down later today (now that it's Saturday).

Flight leaves at 7pm east coast time, arriving in Indy just before midnight. Wished I knew about the Acaeum dinner before I booked the tickets. Oh well, there's always next year!

Since I went for one day only, I thought I should be first posting my GenCon finds...nothing spectacular but cool enough for my novice collecting and enjoyment. Here's the photo:

The Gamescience/Little Soldier/Martian Games stuff was $5-6 ea. All complete. Swordplay even has seven plastic swords (just like the toothpicks in the '70s

) and one uncolored d6.

The Fantastic Wilderlands Beyonde and the Wilderlands of the Magic Realm were about $12 ea. Both complete. I would classify them as fair, but absolutely readable and playable.

Nice pick ups Hector!

First the costumes... As a kid, I loved reading Spy vs. Spy!

I had a pleasant visit at the Pacesetter / OSR booth, Bill, Matt and Frank are really nice guys

Also ran into DBartman and Rabbit67, excellent to meet fellow Acaeumites!

Next, a stop by the Goodman booth to meet Joe and Michael Curtis, super friendly and oddly curious about Canadians... the lovely Mrs Thunder rolled a '1' on the d20 Discount die... fun times, fumbling for dollars

Finally, I had a real nice chat with Ken St Andre... I picked up a few of the T&T limited items... a very cool 1st edition reprint in which Stratochamp gets a nice thank you in the introduction, Saving Fang the only solo published for 1E, and a Gristlegrim Origins pre-pub. Also a visit to the Pagan booth where I scored a couple minty TUOs.

All in all, a short but fun trip to Indy, next year I'll get to the Friday auction for sure... and hopefully the Acaeum dinner too!

Home from Gen Con . . . and about seven months until Gary Con!

I'm too beat at this point for a full summary. As always, it was great seeing old Acaeum friends, as well as new. Highlights? The annual Acaeum dinner, of course. Picking up my Shadows of Esteren and Ehdrigohr Kickstarter rewards, and playing a game of each. True Dungeon with Blackmoor, Saxonangel, Prufrock and stratochamp. And making a reasonable bit of money on the stuff I brought to sell at the auction. Lowlights? Working large parts of Wednesday (other than during the dinner) and Thursday. And, frankly, the collectibles auction. A beat up brown box, a few white boxes, a partially cut later print Outdoor Geomorphs, a Sathporte -- nothing at all very special. There was a complete TSR Periodicals portfolio from the 1980 Gen Con which went to JimK (an infrequent poster to the Acaeum).

In the end, I only bought one item at the auction, but it was a nice one. A copy of the script for the pilot episode of Game of Thrones, signed by the screenwriters, producers and pretty much the whole cast.

And, with the lovely wife's blessing, I have put down an order for a Geek Chic gaming table. Unfortunately, delivery will be about a year off. Sigh.

Yes, there is a reason for that. I think we all fell asleep....

Like Bracton, I am need to compile my thoughts before a complete summary. However, as much as the collectable auction sucked, I have to say that the people who ran the auction did an awesome job. Honestly, they make this incarnation of Gen Con still feel like a game convention - which I don't think it is anymore.

I know most of us have our opinions about WotC, but their absence was palpable. How on earth can you have a Gen Con without a D&D presence? (Yes, I know some of your are snickering, "Well, we haven't had a D&D presence since second edition!") It was just plain odd to have dealer hall without D&D (in whatever form). It kind of sucks when the "tower of t-shirts" piece of shit, I-thought-I-left-that-behind-at-Dayton-Beach, vendor is the center point of the dealer hall. Ok, the rant is started, but I will abstain until I get more clear-headed.

Which table man!?!?!? I've been a fan of Geek Chic for a few years now, and will be able to get one, but only after we buy a house (wife already rubber stamped the yes). I'm looking at a pimped out Emissary, and I also want the Alexandria Codex bookshelf. I realize I'm looking at ~8k of furniture, but I figure it will outlive me...plus they look SO nice.
