In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if that particular person or someone else had ratcheted up bids on you in the past just to see how high you'd go too.

I would really advise just to use one of the several sniping services so that losers like this guy and anyone else just can't take advantage of you in the future. No need to diminish your bidding on ebay, just make it so that you bid at the last few seconds.

I have no idea about best, but I've been very happy with bidnip for many years.  Very reasonable cost and very simple to use.  NEVER had a reliability problem.

Double the actual costs. It was only £12 charge, £6 cost. But still... About $10-12 more in your cash lol

I think I'd agree with the above.  Start by asking for a little bit back.  No reason not to - the only downside would be a slight delay in whatever you next.

From ebay's point of view, they are, intentionally of course, vague:  http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/s ... ml#postage  There is enough wiggle room in there to "hide" small amounts in shipping costs and be compliant.

I generally don't worry about it.  If something is worth $20 to me, and I see shipping is $5, then my max bid is $15.  If they then manage to ship it safely and I see that it only cost them $2, so what?  There is DEFINITELY a line, of course - like the people who used to (still do?) sell $50 items for $25 and then tack on $40 in shipping and handling charges - but for a small amount, forget it.  You're starting to get into the questionable area at £6, no doubt.  Was the total of the sale price plus charged shipping still reasonable?

If I'm overcharged on postage by £3 or more, i always ask for some back.

It does add up - but its the principle more than the money.

Please Note though, although Ebay's policy forbids against excessive shipping charges, they will NOT offer refunds/chargebacks for shipping overcharges, and basically the buyer's only recourse is negative feedback and low seller ratings.  I had this happen to me recently.  I bought a large lot of books, and the seller quoted me $48.00 for shipping after the auction ended.  I asked for a cheaper quote and he would not change the price.  I contacted Ebay and they said they could do nothing.  He ended up using a flat rate box for $10.80, and charged me $48.00.  I was so pissed not only at him, but at Ebay as well for not protecting the buyer.

Did you pay via a credit card through PayPal, or via a PayPal balance? If you used your credit card, contact them, get that $38 back. Personally, I wouldn't have paid. Screw that guy.

Not any more.  They take a percentage of shipping costs now, to counteract just that problem.

With all the % taken and the cut of PayPal, you do have to wonder why you bother selling on there anymore.

Even with that ~15% cut, it's still the best place to sell. It's easy to be crappy when there's no real competition. We need a 2bay or something.
