I'm not particularly fond of the Horror genre myself. Maybe it has something to do with the old b/w one I saw when I was but a wee lad about some creatures that could only be defeated by light shining on them. I slept in a well lit bathroom that night because I was too afraid to turn the light out and leg it to the bedroom.    Geez, must've been what, six? Five?

Anyhoo, I did not see The Ring, but I did see the Korean version of that called Phone. It's much lighter from what I hear, particularly since one of Disney's tentacles had a hold over the purse strings, and seems to have forced a PG rating out of it for the larger audience (and tickets no doubt). I recall reading that the director or producer was considering a remake of his own film at one point.

Another one I saw which sparked a lot of remakes in other countries, including in the U.S. recently, was a Hong Kong film called "The Eye". The elevator scene creeps me out to no end. And that's actually a pretty tame scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuSO-_Xi ... re=related

Watched this little gem alone one night when the family was out of town. Ashamed to say I locked the door to my bedroom that night.

And that is one of the tame scenes?
No wonder I don't watch horror films much. What is great is the (rather excellent I thought) use of suspense in a short scene - and not just relying on lazy-gross-out special effects. A good scene (and yes, Ringu is way more scary than the remake).

Heh...I was just thinking the same thing.  I thought Serenity was pretty good.  Especially since I watched it before I had even seen a single episode of Firefly.  And CS....Centurion can't be a fantasy movie.  There arent any fairies, dragons, wizards or magic.  :D

I might kind of be with Centerstage on this one. I saw the movie after watching Firefly (which is as it should be, because it's the finish to the series) and I can't imagine enjoying it myself without the build up of the TV series episodes.  I might have just walked out of the theater otherwise when I realized it was essentially the wrap up to a longer body of work.  It's akin to seeing Return of the Jedi before Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back, or Aliens 3 before Alien and Aliens. It can be done, but you are missing a lot of enjoyment watching character development and a continued story.
