Hmmm I've asked about shipping charges before the end of an auction. The seller responded that the shipping WAS too much and adjusted it when I won the auction. He had put a shipping total to Europe rather than Canada.
It isn't a crazy/out of line question.

If you shipped the item and kept the shipping bill you would have a defense against a Paypal enquiry.

I sympathize with your frustration. From personal experience, I know it's annoying enough to be mentioned in one of the "Silly Price" threads, but I'd probably go into an asshole-tearing internet rage if I was ever mentioned in a "Shady" thread. I'd make people cry.

A couple of thoughts:

1. He's absolutely not the kind of person that trumps up shipping to make a little extra. I haven't sold anything on Ebay in a while, but I think you have to make a guess on the shipping cost/packaging/whatever ahead of time. Having said that, he was completely in the ballpark on this one. So he didn't pull the auction for an incorrect shipping cost to Ian's question

You pulled an auction with a few hours to go because you had displayed an incorrect shipping cost?! I don't get that at all.
Why not just let me and Pip' fight it out, along with whoever else was going to bid on it, and then ship it to the winner at whatever was the correct cost?
There was no need to pull the whole auction on us because someone had questioned your shipping cost, whether we knew it was you or not.

I know that Tharizdun always took his artwork to a store to have them professionally packaged and shipped. He took great care to make sure that all the art was taken care of and felt that he didn't know how to ensure proper packaging as well as one of the professional stores. So, if you've never shipped out of one of those postal stores, you'd never think that there's a charge over and above the "actual" shipping cost. The USPS rate that Martin mentioned may have been $20, but I can assure you that what Tharizdun paid was at least $5 more for the cost of the packaging and service and tax. The maps on the auction are similar to the ones that I got and will not fit in one of those boxes. I just double checked against the size of a large box and they will not fit protected. That would mean it would have to be shipped in an even larger box. So I could see the total cost for him to be at minimum $30 or more. Remember, he's paying for the box and the packaging service on top of the USPS rate at one of these stores.

Based on what I wrote about above, I think you do owe him an apology.

I do read this as a veiled threat. You saw Tharizdun's post in the classified section here and then proceeded to fire off this warning -- thru Ebay -- not on the Acaeum.

If you see some art from Deogolf or Burntwire or Collector's Trove on Ebay, even with a "perceived error", do you go through the trouble of warning them on Ebay so that there's a "paper trail" and Ebay has official documentation of it in case you want to make an issue of it later?

You knew who he was on here and that he had posted it, so why not PM him instead of the Ebay message if you felt so strongly that there was a problem with the shipping cost? This comes across very strange IMO. People on here on very approachable, so this makes no sense whatsoever.

Were you bidding on the art?  If you were bidding on the item, it would be weird to try and hit him over the head first before sending him money, going through the motions of a transaction.

I think he took his cue from how Clyde Caldwell ships out, always in a box. I've bought from many artists and collectors who ship out professionally in different ways.

Sometimes it's done flat, protected in a sleeve/folder, sandwiched between cardboard, which it is taped to, and then shipped in a "flattened" box. The extra cardboard around it ensures someone can't just bend the whole thing. It would be taped up on all sides of course to avoid water intrusion. Deogolf for instance does a professional job like this. I think some of the stuff from Easley I got this way, too.

Others enclose it in a sleeve which is then placed inside a larger box with peanuts or other packing material and then sealed. I've received art like this even if it's just one sheet of art.

I know Ian didn't intend anything bad with his post, he was just wondering what was going on.

Mr Spock. I did not read any post on TSR art before I sent the post on Ebay. It was exactly as I wrote it. I have previously read threads on Acaeum about all sorts of people on Ebay and only thought I was giving  useful advice, which unfortunately was taken in another way. In another life I was a newseditor, and I possibly made the message too short and to the point. I received a reply to which I replied. I was addressed as Allison in the first reply, and then looked here to see who had written the art thread. Only then did I know it was Tharizdun. I think in all there were four msgs between us. I have nothing to do with anything else that was mentioned about anyone here and have heard nothing more. That is the whole sad tale of my part in this.
