If you're at a point where all civilized government (I use the term loosely) collapses, what makes them think there will any concept of currency at that point? Gold and silver only have value while recognized markets trade in them. No markets, no value. Gold? Silver? You cannot eat them. They are too heavy to carry around. You may be able to trade them for a glass of almost clean water in Bartertown. They are kinda shiny, after all. They only realistic use for them will be to melt them down into bullets.

After 10 yrs, you only have the metal you have originally purchased, your appreciation in the long term is solely based on the supply of and demand for gold affecting the price. A company is generating revenue and growing, so hopefully your investment in 10 yrs has grown in true value, not just price. However, I would not invest in a single company due to the risk of having all your eggs in one basket.
