60 Minutes had a story on Lance Armstrong last night.  No less than 3 of his former team mates are saying under oath that they saw him taking performance enhancing drugs and that he had help from doctors telling him how to beat the tests.  According to lots of the bikers, the tests are easy to beat.  Also, he did test positive once and people far up into the testing agency were bought off.  There is no smoking gun but tons of eye witness testimony that he is as dirty as anyone in the sport.  Thoughts?

I think that some of the stuff they said was plausible. I think other parts strain credulity and are just being sensationalized by people who have an axe to grind and money to be made with books or magazine deals. But I have to treat this like I would if I was on a jury and I was supposed to convict a guy of murder. Before I ruin a dude's life, I need DNA tests or I'm not sending a guy to jail forever based only on eyewitness testimony.  Likewise, before I throw the book at Armstrong I need proof he failed tests and cheated in the form of test results that showed he was not clean. In his favor he has passed hundreds and hundreds of tests; but at this point the preponderance of evidence is starting to add up. Cycling may be the crookedest sport ever since everyone that finished 2nd and 3rd to Lance since 1999 or so has been convicted of doping.  Hell, for the last 20 years it's been a sport full of druggies.  Reminds me of baseball in the 90s or football during the steroid era.

I agree with Mike somewhat that the people coming forward to try and crucify Armstrong are either jealous of his fame and fortune or they are trying to use the publicity to further their own ends.  But even if proof comes out I dont think he ever stops lying about it.  He'll say it was faked or there is a conspiracy against him.  He stands to lose a lot more than most athletes.  This guy is the poster boy for cancer survivors.

I dont know much about how the tests are handled in cycling but I have read that they do more testing in cycling than in just about any other sport.  Seems like a good amount of people in just about every sport imaginable are using illegal drugs to further their career.  Its gotten to the point where I almost dont care anymore.  Especially regarding baseball.  I'm just numb to it.  Bud Selig has made it apparent that he doesnt care as long as he is getting richer.  The record books are forever tainted.  And it is obvious that players that are found guilty, or in some cases, come clean about the use of PED's are basically given a slap on the wrist for their actions when they should be banned from the sport for life.

Barry Bonds is still the "Home Run King" and still a free man.  If he gets convicted of anything at all it will be perjury.  BFD.

Sammy Sosa is a rich man living it up even though he failed a drug test and lied his ass off to congress.

Mark McGwire is still working in baseball.  But only because he came clean about using steroids.  Five years after lying to congress.

Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids and is still playing baseball.  He lied about it when he was outed in Jose Canseco's book and kept lying until he realized he couldnt keep it a secret anymore.

Rafael Palmeiro was also outed in the book, testified before congress that he never took steroids, failed a drug test, was suspended for 10 days, and then changed his statement to implicate another teammate was responsible for him testing positive.

Roger Clemens?  He was indicted for perjury.  Odds are he wont serve one minute of jail time.  Prick.

MLB (and most other agencies) will never take a hardline stance against these guys.  There will never be adequate testing or penalties.  Not as long as the money is flowing in the way it is.

It is reported that Hincampi (sp) under oath testified that he also saw Lance doing performance enhancing drugs.  Hincampi is Lance's best friend.  I do not think he has a book deal or is jealous.  Too many people in the inner sanctom to dismiss.  I think Lance is guilty.  I do now want to think that, but enough evidence out there.  Also, all Lance can say is he never failed a test.  That's not a denial when you had a pesonal relationship with a doctor that was found to be giving cyclists a schedule to use so that they would not show a positive result on the tests.

The only thing about that is that the MLB writers of America have seemed to be saying doping in baseball has repercussions. Of the above list I think only ARod goes in to the Hall of Fame first ballot.  I wouldn't be surprised if they make Clemens and Bonds wait a few years just to prove a point, if not many years. And in years past Sosa, McGwire and Palmeiro might have been borderline HOFers who would have probably gone in eventually. I think now they are out and not getting in.

BTW, just to get this in, Fuck Bud Selig.  Everything bad that has happened in baseball the last 20 years is directly connected to him. If he dropped dead tomorrow I'd cheer.

One might ask, based on that....if everyone else has been caught, why hasn't Armstrong been caught?  (I guess that can be taken two ways.)

It's all crap anyway.  Armstrong is not an active biking competitor, is he?

TBH, most corporations have been doing that to UK buyers for the past few decades. It's funny to see it happening elsewhere. Most things are were more expensive in the UK compared to the likes of the US etc, and only the failings in various economies and the desire for export revenue has brought a little equality or balance to prices recently. Still, it's good to know we're not the only country getting stiffed by the corporations.

So what's to stop me buying GW stuff from my local store and selling it to Ozzie guys on eBay?

This week I've been mostly eating . . . The white ones with the little red flecks in them.

Slightly concerned this morning though with the weather report today for Ben Nevis, the mountain we will be climbing first next Saturday!
Minus 14 wind-chill and up to 70mph winds at the summit with up to 2m of ground snow....!

Wish me luck!!! :)

Can I put a call out to our Scottish members please, with any reliable weather predicitions/news/forecasts for Saturday, as currently we are rather nervous about what its like up there at the mo and are desperately hoping that its going to be much better come the weekend!

Thanks

Nothing, but I'm guessing that if you were buying GW product from them at wholesale prices as a retailer and continuted to sell to Australia, GW would cut you off.

He is not active.  But he is a 7-time winner of the biggest bicycling race in the world.  According to 60 Minutes, he did fail one test and it was "taken care of".  Meaning the testing agency was bought off.  Also, not everyone has been caught.  Seems knowledge of how to beat the tests has been widely disseminated in the bicycling world.

I'm just really dissapointed.  I thought Lance did it right.  But the number of people from his inner sanctom saying he is dirty is too much to ignore.

From what I have read.
IF Lance was NOT on enhancement drugs, he was one of VERY few who weren't...

Drugs schmugs....the biking sport authorities knew all about it all the time.

They had to know.  How could they not know?

Hi,

weather terrible atm. Loads of trees down.

Flight this morning VERY bumpy, heavy landing.

No trains tonight because of severe weather, plus bigger bridges shut.

Loads of ppl at my work stuck and sleeping in the office.

Many flights cancelled tomorrow because of Icelandic volcano again - its even affecting Air Force One.

Good luck for the weekend!

Cheers,
Malc

The same reason no one knew or cared when baseball players were roiding up all over the place. They were knocking the ball out of the park and setting attendence records and making money for the league. the minute they weren't making money in endorsements and pub they were pariahs. Same thing is happening to Lance right now.
