Hi,

if anyone would like any British food bringing over, we will be at Gencon this year, and probably Texas in 2014

Cornish pasties, steak and kidney pudding, black pudding, faggots, caul, tripe etc

British chocolate, sweets etc.

Victoria Sponge, english mustard.

Not sure what anyone would want really.

We'd be happy to oblige.

I think if the sponge has cream in that could be a problem. Just take loads of cream eggs. Everyone likes them.

Hi,

wrong time of year for creme eggs unfortunately - they tend to be available Christmas to Easter.

This is very off-topic, like fall-off-the-end off, but here goes:

For the past 10 years, I have been considering post-masters studies in Religion (I currently have a MAR), and this year the stars finally aligned. I applied to four schools and one already answered: University of Chicago. Now, my first choice was Boston (BU or Harvard) but both are no shows. So, UChicago it might be!

Thing is: I know absolutely, positively NADA about Chicago. Never been, don't know anybody. So...

Any Chicagoans here?
UChicago is in Hyde Park. Good place to live?
I have two sons going with me (15, 13). Good schools in that area?
I don't mind commuting if it means a better school for the kids. Any suggestions?
I will rent for a couple of years. Budget is around $2500; need at least two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Would prefer condo to house (less maintenance). Suggestions?
How are the living expenses? Is it a pricey city?
My wife needs a job. Industrial engineer by training; has worked as a licensed math teacher for the past 12 yrs. Suggestions?
How is the public transportation in Chicago?

I anticipate freezing my ____ off. We are from Puerto Rico. That information I don't need. Any other comments are welcome.

Hector, it sounds like you've already gotten some info. But there are a number of Acaeumites in the Chicago area, including stratochamp, Invincible Overlord and me. My oldest son is a second year at the University of Chicago. So if you want some more information in particular about Hyde Park, PM me and I'll let you know what I know.

It's a nice area. Back in the day when I drove for a messenger service, I made quite a few stops in the area.

There's quite a bit of public transportation in the area. If there's one thing I like about Chicago (if I didn't have a car), it would be the public transportation system. It can take you all over Chicago.

I'm from the southwest side of Chicago (Midway Airport), so I cannot comment much on the other topics (schools... jobs... etc..).

Appreciate the answer. I have googled Chicago intensely the past few days, and my biggest concern right now is the school system. Can't find a good resource/discussions/forums regarding good living areas with good school systems viz a viz rents, transportation, location with respect to UChicago, etc. Guess what I'm looking for is insider/local info on good areas for living and schools, and closeness to UChicago. Other Chicago members here PM'd me and were also willing to help out.

Thank you very much. If we decide to make Chicago our destination, you locals will be the first to know!!
