But in circumstances like this, a burglar gets all they deserve. The other recent instance of someone being shot over a verbal row is disgraceful though. In instances like that, the shooter deserves the book thrown at them

A handgun can only protect you if you use it properly; in this case it served exactly the purpose it was designed for, home defense. The mother didn't shoot her children by accident; she didn't freeze up and not pull the trigger; she didn't need a high capacity magazine (although next time I would recommend either higher caliber ammo or a higher capacity magazine; four shots and he's still around?). Unfortunately there are a lot of idiots in the world and the good stories like this get buried when the lunatics act out and shoot everyone in sight. Notice this burglar didn't just rob the house and leave; he actively searched for the woman and her kids, they probably would be dead now if she hadn't been armed. In this case the handgun prevented at least three murders.

I found this quote by Louis Nix from a cbssports.com article puzzling:
