We already know that there are top-tier bio-weapons labs worldwide that are creating all sorts of plagues. The excuse has been that they can then create the cure for just about anything an enemy might throw at them. Remember that they dug up the 1918 flu not too long ago. What do you think they are doing with it? Giving it a birthday party?

It came out in Senate Report 103-97 that experiments are done on U.S. citizens and military routinely. Remember the Tuskegee experiments?

These are not conspiracy theories. They are conspiracy facts. Quite often, the word 'theory' is bandied about to quell the voice of anyone that simply asks a question, because they are inconvenient little buggers. Asking how it could be that the towers could collapse via raging infernos on 9-11 when there is not only video footage of people standing in the holes the planes made, but audio from the firefighter scanners stating that only a couple of hoses were needed to put out the fires on the floor the plane went in is not presenting a theory. That would be an example of asking questions, which any crime investigator would do. The wacked-out theories happen when some yahoo comes up with a hologram plane hitting a tower theory because he photoshops a black & white screen grab of a grey-ish plane against a grey-ish sky so that the plane disappears. I could do that with my car. I wonder where all the gas went that I put in?

Anyway, vaccines are indeed huge bucks. I seriously doubt that GlaxoSmithCline, as corrupt as business that it is, is deliberately making diseases to release upon the public, and I doubt that a small company would have the resources to have a top-tier lab. But, profiteering from them I would not doubt. Recall the whole Zika thing a few years ago. We were being scared by an accomplice press that if women did not get the vaccine, and they got bitten by a Zika-infected mosquito, their kids would end up with shrunken heads. Big bucks for the vaccine industry. Unfortunately, it was all a lie. Our press did not report that investigators near the center of the shindig noticed that the deformed kids only happened in one small area, when Zika was found on a much larger scale. This led them to ask questions (darn those theorists). If the virus can be found in such a large area, how is it that the deformities were so localized? What is different? It became known that the area affected had a larvicide to kill off the skeeters added to it's water supply. It was suggested that this should be investigated as a possible cause. I never found out if it was the case, as I lost track of things at that point.

Those were fire elementals, possibly mephits.

Don't worry, I lost track a few sentences into your post...but if you really want to talk conspiracy theory, what if China deliberately exaggerated the deadliness of the new virus, in order to cut trade ties. After all, it would be difficult to start a world war if our societies are too entangled with peaceful pursuits of commerce.

Sea-to-sky-games wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:JAMA yesterday suggested fatality rate could be closer to 0.4 percent (or less in the US) but it could affect lots of people so, yeah, the elderly etc. could be hard hit.

CNN is reporting today that the fatality rate is closer to 2 percent for the Corona virus.  When compared to the fatality rate for the common flu, which is only .1 percent, that makes the Corona virus 20 times more deadly.  Since about 16,000 people have died this season (winter of 19-20) from the flu, 320,000 people dying from the Corona virus would impact most people's world.  In other words, many of us would know or know of someone who died.  And this is not to mention all the people who'd be hospitalized, out of work for week, etc...  That figure could radically change for a bunch of different reasons.  However, one thing I also learned which is peculiar about the Corona virus is that it seems to be less deadly for children than for older adults and those with pre-existing conditions compared to the common flu.  Scientists aren't sure why, but it is an interesting development.   8)

Sadly we will never know the true devastation that this virus has done to china.  Any real numbers we could have extrapolated from them being transparent about transmission and death rates have been incinerated along with their citizens.

Perhaps, but we can try to work with what we've got. The new virus supposedly has a death rate of 2.3%, while the spanish flu of 1918 had 2.5%. These numbers seem close, but think of how the world has changed. In 1918, new forms of transportation led to a more interconnected world that sped the transmission of the spanish flu. In modern times, we've reverted to horse-drawn buggies & localized economies that...wait, hold on. Sorry, I got that backwards. We're all doomed.

Found this interesting - WHO putting together some info on the limited access they had.

This has the link to the PDF and Video of the press conference

The WHO sent 25 international experts to China and here are their main findings after 9 days : China_Flu

5% of people who are diagnosed with Covid require artificial respiration. Another 15% need to breathe in highly concentrated oxygen - and not just for a few days. The duration from the beginning of the disease until recovery is 3 to 6 weeks on average for these severe and critical patients (compared to only 2 weeks for the mildly ill). The mass and duration of the treatments overburdened the existing health care system in Wuhan many times over. The province of Hubei, whose capital is Wuhan, had 65,596 infected persons so far. A total of 40,000 employees were sent to Hubei from other provinces to help fight the epidemic. 45 hospitals in Wuhan are caring for Covid patients, 6 of which are for patients in critical condition and 39 are caring for seriously ill patients and for infected people over the age of 65. Two makeshift hospitals with 2,600 beds were built within a short time. 80% of the infected have mild disease, ten temporary hospitals were set up in gymnasiums and exhibition halls for those.

The vast majority of those infected sooner or later develop symptoms. Cases of people in whom the virus has been detected and who do not have symptoms at that time are rare - and most of them fall ill in the next few days.

The most common symptoms are fever (88%) and dry cough (68%). Exhaustion (38%), expectoration of mucus when coughing (33%), shortness of breath (18%), sore throat (14%), headaches (14%), muscle aches (14%), chills (11%) are also common. Less frequent are nausea and vomiting (5%), stuffy nose (5%) and diarrhoea (4%). Running nose is not a symptom of Covid.

An examination of 44,672 infected people in China showed a fatality rate of 3.4%. Fatality is strongly influenced by age, pre-existing conditions, gender, and especially the response of the health care system. All fatality figures reflect the state of affairs in China up to 17 February, and everything could be quite different in the future elsewhere.

Healthcare system: 20% of infected people in China needed hospital treatment for weeks. China has hospital beds to treat 0.4% of the population at the same time - other developed countries have between 0.1% and 1.3% and most of these beds are already occupied with people who have other diseases. The most important thing is firstly to aggressively contain the spread of the virus in order to keep the number of seriously ill Covid patients low and secondly to increase the number of beds (including material and personnel) until there is enough for the seriously ill. China also tested various treatment methods for the unknown disease and the most successful ones were implemented nationwide. Thanks to this response, the fatality rate in China is now lower than a month ago.

Pre-existing conditions: The fatality rate for those infected with pre-existing cardiovascular disease in China was 13.2%. It was 9.2% for those infected with high blood sugar levels (uncontrolled diabetes), 8.4% for high blood pressure, 8% for chronic respiratory diseases and 7.6% for cancer. Infected persons without a relevant previous illness died in 1.4% of cases.

Based on JAMA the fatality rate will likely be closer to 0.4 percent once the data comes in and, after all is said and done, I suspect a lot less and similar to the flu. The WHO tends to exaggerate (c.f., swine flu, etc.).

Deadlord wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread:Here's one for the conspiracy theorists: If you owned a small biotech company that dealt in vaccines and/or genetic research, would it not be a good business move to create a virulent but low-lethality virus, drop it in a high-density area, and watch your stock soar as you announced to the world that you just happen to be on the verge of a vaccine? IBio or Vaxart are great examples of that............

Did that in my Blue Planet games in the late 1990s, Frank! :D

Wow, thanks a bunch, Allan! I had meant to check into BP a long time ago and forgot!
I made plans a few weeks ago to have a viral outbreak in our D&D campaign. I have a few ideas, but the one I think I'll go with is a disease which lowers intelligence by 1 point daily for 1-12 days, with 0 meaning death. Most clerics will have a hard time getting spells, especially cure disease, as the deities will be a bit overworked. An excellent way to strip out excess treasure when they pay 10K for a cure disease scroll.
I'm thinking the name should be Moronavirus. Thoughts?

I'm no conspiracy theorist and I am not into hysterics.  But this covid thing is not just the flu.  The actions of the authorities do not match their words.  The flu happens every year all over the world.  Whole countries dont shut down because of it.  Entire cities and regions are not quarantined for the flu.  The flu doesnt trigger travel bans. Medical staff dont wear full hazmat suits to transfer flu patients.  2 + 2 is not equaling 4 here.

Agreed.  However, I suspect once a vaccine is developed, the lethality rate will drop considerably in developed countries to something closer to the flu.  The bans and quarantines are helping slow its spread until the vaccine is produced.   8)

There won't be a vaccine for at least a year or more.  And the flu vaccine is only barely effective.  It's totally hit or miss.  Some years it works, some years it's worthless.  Because it mutates.  The Covid that hits next year could very well be a different strain by then.   We'll have a nice vaccine for THIS year's Covid ready by 2021 though.  Which is nice I guess.

This is kinda where I’m at too. All of us would be thrilled if this thing petered out, but most of us have elderly relatives such as parents, aunts, uncles, or grandparents.

China didn’t lock down 70+ million people, jail doctors who spoke up, temporarily shutter a huge part of their economy, and build dozens of new hospitals just for sh*ts and giggles and the common cold or flu.

The fact that they’d put their economy on hold, knowing there was a chance it could push companies into moving production outside of China alone, has huge implications.

Here’s a bit more out of Iran:

Ayatollah Tabrizian, a prominent clergyman & a self-proclaimed expert in “Islamic medicine”, has published the following list on how to avoid #coronavirus:

* Comb your hair thoroughly

* Eat lots of apples & onions

* Dip a cotton ball in oil & insert it in your anus

Wonder if there’s been a run on cotton balls as well?

They are now saying that the international death rate for those who get it is 3.4%, not the 2.3% being reported before. What will they say tomorrow?
