Yes, looks like a 1st print Beta. The description has an interesting quote as well, which may be worthy of following-up with the seller ;-)

Original owner, smoke free environment. I only wished now I had gotten Gary to sign this set when we used to talk back during the gaming conventions at the Horticultural Hall in Lake Geneva. But at the time, who knew?

Printing error, or counterfeit printout?

On first glance this appeared to be a simple black and white printout of the 1980 TSR catalog, but then the insides are in full color. Is this a fake, as I strongly suspect, or is it a legit error?

"There is one more Gateway to Adventure catalog that I am aware of (but do not own). It has a black cover and seems to have shown up in some version of the Basic set. I have only ever seen 2 or 3 auctions with this."

The Strong National Museum of Play has one of those black and white cover catalogs.

Definitely real. It is the catalog published in 1979, showing items available for 1980. 8 pages. Love that the "g" series modules are described as Giant Foemen.

As an update, I did end up eventually owning one, but sold it a little while back - these also tend to come with order forms.  Have probably seen about 6 or so copies of this one so its quite rare.

I'm curious Mark, when you write "seen" do you mean seen in person, owned, seen listed on sites, some combination thereof? I've owned two (and have one, because I have no desire to keep doubles of things), but I have probably seen another few over the years, usually quite battered.

I obviously meant this as a broader question. As an example, I know of six Jade Hare's with cover, but the only one I have ever seen personally is mine that is in shrink. Of the other five, two were sold on auction sites, and the other three were mentioned to me by people I trust.

Personally, I know of four sets of Greyhawk reference sheets, all of which I owned, with only the Mint copy remaining in my possession.

Etc.

Just wondering.  How would you reasonably know these were original?  Seems like it would very easy to copy or am I missing something?

There are many clues that indicate these are authentic, especially if you have seen an original.  The paper texture, coloration, the ink fading in specific spots, the one bag, and the apparent aging of paper.  In addition, the letter provides some provenance to the authenticity.

These are not that easy to duplicate, but it's always a good idea to have some provenance from the seller to back up the items authenticity, or an experienced collector's assessment before jumping in feet first.

By the way, I asked the seller if it was actually Mint, and he demurred, indicating that it's not a 10 out of 10. It's more like a new book one would find on a shelf, but there are flaws.

Good info.  Thanks bro.

In this case, "seen" on ebay in what I believe are distinct auctions (rather than the same copy being passed around).  I have only ever had one of these in person.

I am curious what happened with the second printing woody.  The seller pulled the listing, then re-listed it for $9,000, and then accepted an offer.

Apparently, it sold once for $4500 BIN, then was relisted and sold on a best offer of $7000.
