Yeah, im thinking this B3 auction is going to end badly.

Here is an email the guy auctioning it sent me in regards to a query I made:

I did not really  notice that
But I Know since I was in the printing industry for 15 years that this one looks like it
never got the final cuts after printing and binding together
That means some one at the printing shop took home a press copy.
That would make this one very  rare
That's pretty rare  or  the this was a mis-cut item.
Let me check with  the original owner. as far as I know this is original
All  my D&D items came from a private collection.

So it's not his own item.  He may be as sincere as hell but this sends up a ton of warning signs.

I especially like the comment about being in the printing business.

If a PDF was made from an original copy that had Spine creases I would assume those spine creases also come out on subsequent prints?

If so, then the buyer is going to be PISSED... if there is a buyer that is.
Still no bids.
Acaeum Forum may be affecting possible bidders Bid button fingers?
Or the folks who might bid are wise enough to see that it is (perhaps) a suspect item?

It has only been one day, but My questions remain unanswered as well.

The Ebay buyer protection would cover this if it turned out to be fraudulent, I would think. Something similar to what Grodog went through on his purchase a while back?

One thing about printing from that pdf would be that the person would have had to have done some photoshop'ing or layout work to merge/blend the front and back covers together before it was printed. I was just thinking that without an original to compare to, there could be a lot of inconsistencies in the printing. Of course, as you guys mentioned the color and the printing stock would be obvious tells.

Hopefully the seller comes through on those photos. I'm sure he's getting inundated  :D  ...

edit: You know, I was just comparing the orange B3 back and front cover art versus the green version...there was some re-formatting done, but the funny thing is that the back cover art by Jeff Dee looks like it was unfinished on the orange version. If you look at the bottom of the fighter's outstretched hand (and a shield on the forearm of the other?), it looks white/unpainted. The green version is cropped, but you can still see some white from the top of the shield or whatever it was supposed to be.

This concerns me even more in that he answered your inquiry, yet has not posted additional pictures.
I suspect I was not the only person to ask for them either. :?

If it were truly a non-trimmed print, the paper size would be larger than 11"x17", probably a 12"x18" sheet (or whatever they used back in those days). It would also have printer registration marks, and crop marks for the trimming process. I see neither in the pics.

Someone with 15 years of experience in the printing industry would know this. I do, and I never ran a press. Plenty of pre-press and related stuff, though. You pick up a few things... I'd ask about the paper size.

This gets better and better. Anyone with a shrinked copy, was it the kind with a seam in back or the kind that was tightened around the module with no seam?

My copy has original shrink wrap.
A Seam is at the bottom and both side edges.
There is a tiny (1/4") round hole in the shrink wrap just above the right shoulder of the warrior on the back side.
I read somewhere that all of them had the hole and that the hole served some purpose.

A suspicious item disappears, to be replaced by a post for a SW copy of the same item, with no photos. Uh, no thanks.

I think the lister was caught, and knows it, so they took the questionable item away.  Maybe this item is totally legit, but after what has happened already, I wouldn't touch it.

Something really fishy is going on.

I'm hoping that anyone in the printing business would be able to tell an original one from one done up on a laser or inkjet printer.

I didn't think the other copy wasn't in shrink  - maybe copied over from a different auction listing?

About the spine creases - I don't think they are from the original PDF.  However, they look like creases that form from a paperstock cover not on the typical D&D module cardstock.  Also, the spine of the original looks more rounded rather than the point of cardstock.

Ask for and ye shall receive  :D  :D

.... (I can send anyone the pdfs and jpgs, if you like, btw)

actually earlier today I thought about saving those images on the white background, but I didn't.

Even though I wasn't on his page, I hadn't updated my ebay page in a while, so here's the little link for it as it originally looked...

Anyways, these next ones were his auction from April. I thought at the time (I didn't look as thoroughly as you guys did) that the white around the edges was the booklet hanging out.

I think the hole in the shrink is an air vent and keeps the shrink from bubbling when it gets sealed onto the module. When I worked in a record store in the early 80s we had a heat shrinkmachine and sometimes air would get trapped when we put the wrap on the record album.

That looks fake as hell. The cover looks like paper rather than cardboard. Makes me think the pages inside are rounded too instead of being in crisply folded booklet. Can anyone even spot staples on the spine?

I could be jumping to conclusions here, but I wonder if the seller is learning from his "mistakes" and now re-printing with some of these "issues" ironed out...

I have a copy printed from the pdf, and the cover looks exactly like the one in these pictures (white border).
