I read somewhere an article talking about this. I thought an interesting point it made is that for big budget movies, typically as much is spent on advertising the movie as is spent of the production of the movie itself. So often also, the popularity of US (or domestic) ticket sales are trumped by Worldwide ticket Sales and various Home Video platforms. Sometimes the opposite happens when a movie is expected to do very well Worldwide and the Studios invest heavily in advertising for it, it bombs on export, and even though the domestic numbers were great - now the movie didn't meet the Studio's expectations.
It gets extremely difficult to figure out the profitability of movies because the Aggregators aren't looking at the whole picture of how profitable a movie really is or isn't. Or there can be the scenario where a movie has a very mediocre release but they make a killing on Toy Sales or something like that - that could matter greatly in whether a sequel gets made (or a dozen of them).

Sea-to-sky-games wrote in Random Thoughts or OT Chit-Chat Thread: Once a rarity, there's likely diminishing returns to Star Wars movies at this point as well. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I think that is a very astute observation, and I agree.

As film critics go, I like Richard Brody ... he has seen a lot and always has something interesting to say. Here is his take on the Star Wars Solo movie.

It's a real shame "Solo" is actually going to lose substantial money. Ron Howard did the best he could on short notice salvaging a massive train wreck, and though I felt it was nowhere near as good as the better Star Wars movies, it succeeded as entertaining fun, and certainly was a lot better than episodes I and II. If there is to be a sequel to "Solo" , have Ron Howard helm it from the beginning so the movie is done right the first time and there is no need to salvage a train wreck.

I went to see the movie Incredibles 2 yesterday with my wife, and we enjoyed it.  This movie begins with a short intro movie which was kinda strange.  Pixar has done this with other movies in the past.  Incredibles 2 was a family-friendly movie if there ever was one.  The whole movie is as much about family as it is about superheroes.  The parents are un-cool, the kids want to be treated like adults, the man is trying to figure out what it means to be a father/husband/man, blah, blah, blah.  It's fun to see yourself in the mirror sometimes.  The humor is O.K. most of the time.  One of the things that made the first Incredibles movie so good was the evil genius was so good.  The bad guy this time is shifty, but not as convincing.  It wasn't too long or too short.

There is no bonus scene at the end.  The theater was fairly crowded for a 7:15 PM showing, even though the movie has been out over a week.  If you really liked the first movie, or need a family-friendly movie, see it in the theater.  Be aware that there are flashing light scenes that can possibly cause photosensitive epileptic seizures in some people.  Otherwise, wait until it comes out on TV.  8)

I went to see the movie The Ant-Man and the Wasp today, and it's a good popcorn movie.  It was arguably better than the first Ant-Man movie, although just slightly better.  Within the Marvel spectrum, this was on the lighter side.  The humor wasn't great but wasn't bad either.  Actor Michael Peña had some of the funnier lines.  Speaking of actors, the acting was pretty good, but mostly because there were so many solid actors including Lawrence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer (who looked pretty good!).  It wasn't too long or too short.  The plot was just wild enough to make it interesting but without losing the audience.

There were two bonus scenes at the end.  The first is worth waiting for but the second is not.  The theater was sparse for a 3:20 PM showing.  I did not see it in IMAX or 3D, and I recommend staying away from 3D because there are plenty of fight scenes.  If you really like Marvel movies, or need a family-friendly movie, see it in the theater. Otherwise, wait until it comes out on TV.   8)

I don't know if it was spotted earlier, but I just learned about Mike Invincibleoverlord's death on Dwarven Forge forum.

Sad news indeed.  :(  Thanks for posting this; he was a great contributor here, and will be missed.

As an aside, the thread linked above to Dwarven Forge is posted in reverse order to what you might expect.  So the first posting is listed on page 2, at the bottom.

Another suicide in the news, only this time it's in the gaming community.  I was reading an article which stated,
Suicide rates have increased across gender and geographic lines, but nearly 84 percent of people who kill themselves are white, and about 77 percent are men.
I hope that if anyone feels like they are drifting in that direction they'll reach out for help.  We all need help from time to time.

Presuming this is true, that is awful news.  :(  Back in the day, Mike and I corresponded many times both publicly here and via PM, several messages of which I still have stored because of what we talked about.

Mike is one the nicest, most genuine guys that I ever talked to here.  What a shame.

Partially because it's my job, and partly because it can't shared enough, the National Suicide Hotline:

Be well everyone,

Good to hear. I do wonder though if it is as much about (a) nostalgia and (b) tabletop as am alternative to video that is driving that (rather than what he calls its "immersive" nature...). Kudos to Hasbro to making it accessible to new users. My prediction is that their "digital suite" of D&D apps will tank big time. People are attracted to playing face to face - long may it continue :)

That really, really sucks ass. He was an amazingly nice guy and a hell of a contributor. I've lost several friends to their own hand and it's worse than losing them to a disease or accident.

I met Mike at Gencon one year and I did buy some of his collection when he was winding it down.  He was a cool individual.  I was wondering what happened to him.  Sad thing  :(

Save me a seat to play with him in the great beyond.....

That is sad news indeed. His was the fist collection that really blew my mind in the early days of the Acaeum.

Curt Gould, there is a shadow cast in your Acaeum avatar that makes it look (to me at least) that you have earrings on, so I always think of that as your pirate picture. Argghhh!
