You got that right.

Are the casualties more one sided - sure.  Are the numbers sited in the press as given to them by Hamas factual - I seriously doubt it.

My comment - Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

On a somewhat more positive note...

Is this the feel good story of the year or what?????

Absolutely incredible no one was killed.

NEW YORK (Jan. 16) — Investigators brought in a giant crane and a barge Friday to help pull a US Airways jetliner from the Hudson River, and survivors among the 155 people aboard recounted tales of horror and hailed the pilot as a hero who delivered them from certain death.
Pilot Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III was in good spirits and showing no outward signs of stress from the ordeal, a pilots union official said.
'Miracle on the Hudson'Trela Media, AP14 photos   Federal investigators have begun looking into exactly what caused a US Airways jet to go down Thursday in the frigid waters of the Hudson River off New York City. The Airbus 320, in the top right of the picture above, approaches the Hudson River. The plane ditched in the water. Everyone aboard survived.

While on a rescue raft with pilot Sullenberger in the frigid cold, passenger Billy Campbell said he went to him.
"I leaned over and grabbed his arm, and I said I just want to thank you on behalf of all of is, Campbell told NBC's "Today" show. "He just said, 'You're welcome.'"
Campbell was sitting in the back of the plane when it landed on the water.
"The water was rushing in through the window seams and we couldn't get the back exit open," he said. "So, that scared us a little bit, and we tried and the flight attendant did a wonderful job trying, but then finally turned and said immediately "'Go to the wing (exit).'"
The parents of a 3-year-old girl and a 9-month-old boy recounted Friday how they and a fellow passenger prepared themselves for the crash landing and escaped from the fast-submerging plane.
"I held Sophia and we did the best we could to brace ourselves up," Martin Sosa, the father, told NBC's "Today." "And the gentleman beside me said, "Would you like me to brace your son? ... And I said okay, because he mentioned that he had been on scary flights before."

"And he did, he braced my son. There was an impact. My son was crying. That was such a good sign to me."
National Transportation Safety Board investigators will now focus on recovering the black box from the plane and interviewing the crew about the accident — apparently caused by birds that slammed into the plane's two engines. The Airbus A320, built in 1999, was tethered to a pier on the tip of Lower Manhattan on Friday morning — about 4 miles from where it touched down. Only a gray wing tip could be seen jutting out of the water near a Lower Manhattan sea wall. About a block away, it was business as usual as residents jogged or headed to work.
"We want to get the plane recovered as soon as possible but we want to do it a safe way," NTSB spokeswoman Kitty Higgins said.
Higgins said one challenge will be hauling the plane out of the water without causing it to break apart.
Sullenberger and co-pilot Jeff Skiles and crew have become instant heroes for guiding the plane to safety and safely evacuating the passengers. Sullenberger's wife told CNN she hadn't been watching the news and was stunned to hear about the ordeal from her husband after it was all over.
"I've heard Sully say to people, 'It's rare for an airline pilot to have an incident in their career,'" Lorrie Sullenberger said. "When he called me he said, 'There's been an accident.' At first I thought it was something minor, but then he told me the circumstances and my body started shaking and I rushed to get our daughters out of school."
James Ray, a spokesman for the U.S. Airline Pilots Association, said he spoke with Sullenberger on Friday and described him as being "in good shape physically, mentally and in good spirits."
"He was just very calm and cool, very relaxed, just very professional," Ray said.
Ray said the flight crew was resting and likely would meet with investigators later Friday or Saturday. He said the crew has been asked not talk to the press about the accident until after the NTSB investigation is complete.
Sullenberger, 57, of Danville, Calif., is a former Air Force fighter pilot who has flown for US Airways for 29 years. He also runs a safety consulting firm.
US Airways chief executive Doug Parker said in a statement it was premature to speculate about the cause. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said there was no immediate indication the incident was "anything other than an accident."
On his Friday morning radio show, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city "got away with a miracle." He planned to honor the rescuers at a City Hall ceremony later Friday.
It was a chain of improbability. Birds tangle with airplanes regularly but rarely bring down commercial aircraft. Jet engines sometimes fail — but both at once? Pilots train for a range of emergencies, but few, if any, have ever successfully ditched a jet in one of the nation's busiest waterways without any life-threatening injuries.
"We had a miracle on 34th Street. I believe now we have had a miracle on the Hudson," Gov. David Paterson said.
If the accident was hard to imagine, so was the result: Besides one victim with two broken legs, there were no other reports of serious injuries to the 155 people aboard.
"You're happy to be alive, really," 23-year-old passenger Bill Zuhoski said.
US Airways Airbus A320, bound for Charlotte, N.C., took off from LaGuardia Airport at 3:26 p.m. Less than a minute later, the pilot reported a "double bird strike" and said he needed to return to LaGuardia, said Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
Passengers quickly realized something was terrifyingly wrong.
"I heard an explosion, and I saw flames coming from the left wing, and I thought, `This isn't good,'" said Dave Sanderson, 47, who was heading home to Charlotte from a business trip. "Then it was just controlled chaos. People started running up the aisle. People were getting shoved out of the way."
Then came an ominous warning from the captain: "Brace for impact because we're going down," according to passenger Jeff Kolodjay, 31.
Some passengers prayed. Vallie Collins, 37, tapped out a text message to her husband, Steve: "My plane is crashing." For a desperate half-hour, he was unable to get in touch with her to learn that she had survived.
Onshore, from streets and office windows, witnesses watched the plane steadily descend off roughly 48th Street in midtown Manhattan.
"I just thought, `Why is it so low?' And, splash, it hit the water," said Barbara Sambriski, a researcher at The Associated Press, who watched the water landing from the news organization's high-rise office.
The 150 passengers and five crew members were forced to escape as the plane quickly became submerged up to its windows in 36-degree water. Dozens stood on the aircraft's wings on a 20-degree day, one of the coldest of the winter, as commuter ferries and Coast Guard vessels converged to rescue them.
One ferry, the Thomas Jefferson of the company NY Waterway, arrived within minutes. Riders grabbed life vests and rope and tossed them to plane passengers in the water.
"They were cheering when we pulled up," Capt. Vincent Lombardi. "People were panicking. They said, `Hurry up! Hurry up!'"
Two police scuba divers said they pulled a woman from a lifeboat "frightened out of her mind" and lethargic from hypothermia. Helen Rodriguez, a paramedic who was among the first to arrive at the scene, said she saw one woman with two broken legs.
Paramedics treated at least 78 patients, many for hypothermia, bruises and other minor injuries, fire officials said. Some of the shivering survivors were swaddled in blankets, their feet and legs soaked.

I don't "love" Israel though. I don't hate them, but I certainly don't love them.  For one thing, I think they hold far to much sway in our own political process here.  Granted I am sure that it is done out of what the governement feel is a necessity in order to be able to maintain a strong influence in that region, but I still think we hold a lot more of the cards in that situation then we give ourselves credit for and allow Israel too much say here.

With that said, its not as simple as this most recent spat.  The history of this conflict and its atrocites goes back far further than November of 2008. That has to be taken into consideration to understand the whole story. With that in mind, if the Hamas led Palestinians don't want to get their ass kicked, then maybe they shouldn't start the fight.

So I guess its ok for Hamas to kill a few Isrealies from time to time. Or maybe one of the rockets hits a school and kills a few dozen kids. So what...Isreal should sit back and take it.

No, I think they are completely justified in their attack. And no I don't like to see civilians getting wounded or killed. Its horrible. But as I have said before, sometimes you have to make a hard choice. Well, there it is.

And by the way, if Isreal simply wanted to kill a 1,000 civilians, they could have done that in few hours. Not that I am overly confident that Hamas figures are very accurate in any case.

I have said enough. On to other things...

bbarsh,

I knew we were not far apart in our positions.

"The simple truth; however, is that I firmly believe the arab league has no intention of ever letting Isreal exist. So to just sit aside and let Isreal be destroyed is not an option for me. Just my opinion."

Exactly!!  So we side with Israel and Iran and Syria side with the Palestinains and we have these little blow-ups that kill 10,000 or so every few years.  So let's get it over with.  Who says Israel will lose.  They've fought Arab invasions twice and pushed them back.

So, if I may ask, what is your connection with Israel.  Are you Jewish, a Christian that identifies with Israel?  I completely understand if you do not want to answer that question as it is quite personal.

We have two peoples who have legitimate claims to the same land.  Claims that arrise out of each's religious beliefs.  How do you negotiate that.

Israel has tried in my opinion.  They are willing to recoginize a Palestinian state.  And the Palestinians continually choose poor leadership.  But you are absolutely crazy if you believe this can be solved with anything short of all out war.

Basically, everything dates back to the beginnings of the Cold War, when Russia and the USA were (in their minds) dividing up the rest of the world.  The first policies towards Israel were pretty hands off, until the Soviets began making overtures and giving aid to the new nation. The US quickly realized how valuable an ally would be in the middle east, as well as foiling the Soviets attempt to get a foothold there. Thus it began.

I agree with other posters. To take this current conflict as an isolated incident is useless.  Nothing that has happened in the last few months was in a vaccum.

Plus, I don't even have to take a survey, if you polled all US citizens and ask them who they would rather have in charge of a nuke, Israel or Hamas, that poll would be pretty darn one sided......   I don't know if that qualifies as a love affair, but I do feel safer at night with the current arrangement than I would otherwise, and so should anyone else.

Maybe I am not understanding your point, but it sure sounds like you are saying it is ok for Hamas to conduct terrorist operations, it is just unfortunate that civilian populace might be affected by retaliation.

And by the way, when war is ongoing there are Good guys and Bad guys. When politics sticks its idiotic fingers in the mix you get Samalia. I know most people would love to go through life without ever picking a side. Most don't have to. But that does not mean it is not required, because it is.

It is not "OK" for civilians on either side to be killed but in conflicts it is inevitable.
The labels of "Good Guys" and "Bad Guys" are just that, labels.

The history of Israel / Judea / Palestine is layered and multifaceted, from the earliest days of the Roman occupation (and before that by locals like Babylonians and Egyptians) through the British Mandate of Palestine to the official declaration of independence... finding one single moment that "caused" anything is pointless. The entire history is full of such moments. There will never be reconciliation.

You really need to examine the Isreali wars. The first time, the arabs screwed up bad. The second time around Isreal wasn't waiting for the attack and was able to act pre-emptively. I am no so sure they will be so lucky a third time. But who knows. But a concerted arab nation foray would probably doom Isreal. And I don't think the invaders are going to actually be humane in their treatment of Isreali civilians.

My background has little to do with the conflict. I am not Jewish and in fact I have probably met less than a dozen jewish people in my entire life. I have no connection at all with Isreal. Closest I got was the Sinai or Iraq.

No my motivations are quite simple. Right and Wrong. Of course, I know that is subjective, but they are my opinions. And like I have said previously, I have seet two wars up close and personal. It is an ugly thing. We shouldn't be in such a hurry to see one involving Isreal. Things will get out of hand as they always do.

Jason my man. But you see there are good guys and bad guys. Maybe not on a personal level as you suggest. But overall, there are. The Japanese and Germans committed horrific attrocities upon civilians and military personal. Then it was the Russians. You see, wars are not fought because I don't get along with some enemy soldier who may or may not be just like me. They are fought for other reasons, sometime noble, sometimes not.

For my part, I'm gonna side with my country. I like the side of history that America is on. Hamas and Hezbolla, not so much...

The Japan situation was another complex issue where Franklin D. Roosevelt in July of 1941 made the decision to cut off 80% of the oil supply to Japan as a message that Japanese expansion was not acceptable.
This immediately crushed their economy so it was very easy for the Japanese leadership to demonize the United States.
This is no defense of the brutal tactics used by the Japanese during the war but from their soldiers point of view most of the time they were hiding in holes in the ground waiting for artillery to rain down on them or for flamethrowers to burn them out. To the average Japanese soldier their hatred towards all things American must have been immense.
Japanese POW camps were no picnics and Canadians are reminded every Remembrance Day about how Canadian troops suffered at the hands of their Japanese captors.
Some Canadians were captured very early in the war and were prisoners until the end. Many did not survive.

The whole Germany thing is almost incomprehensible. So many mistakes were made after world war one that led to an environment where a Hilter was even possible. If the Germans had not started a two front war with Russia we might be speaking German today.  8O

The Germans tried to wipe out an entire group of people. The Russians were just a evil incarnate. History is full of this type of behavior. But as whole, and specifically, in the modern era the U.S. clearly stands head and shoulders above the murderous nature of its enemies.

The 20th century saw millions more civilians killed by their own tyrannical leaders than all the wars of the 20th century combined (Stalin, Hitler, Mao, etc.)  Likewise we see Hamas killing their own people to eliminate political rivals or anyone they view as a threat to their ideals. (Yes, they manage to have time to do this in between firing rockets into Israel).

Israel goes to great difficulty to periodically eliminate Hamas leaders with the minimization of civilian casualties (I'm not talking about this major military operation or the other major conflicts) but they do this to eliminate a foreign threat to their national security and the safety of their people (terrorists).  They are not also out there assassinating members of the Likud party or other Israelies just because they deem them a threat to the current power structure.

The Russians had over 11 million civilian deaths in World War 2, Germany had over 1.5 million and Japan had 580,000. United States had 1,700 and the UK had 67,000. If you look strictly at results it seems that civilians in the "Evil" countries paid a much higher price than the "Good" countries.

Of course the leaders of countries make the ultimate decision about what direction to project their power and how they will do so. For the average citizen, even in a democracy, there is very little that they can do to influence events.

Of course in the modern era the US has become famous internationally for projecting their power through surrogates. Propping up dictators and thugs with money and weapons and dumping them when they are no longer convenient.
- Augusto Pinochet in Chile
- Contras in Central America
- Noriega in Panama
- Suharto in Indonesia with the resulting massacres in East Timor
- Marcos in the Philippines
- Saddam Hussein in his fight against Iran
- The Shah of Iran after the Mossadegh government nationalized the oil reserves
plus others...

What I am trying to say is that on a national level the concepts of good and evil is meaningless. It is merely a marketing tool used to direct the sentiments of the citizenry. Countries spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing to create a "brand" for their policies. Even the military recognizes the effectiveness of these techniques and has psychological warfare units working on "marketing campaigns" and ways to sell a turd as a chocolate bar.

I'm sorry Ben, you are a good guy, but enough with the delusion that America is always wrong and to blame. If the U.S. did not support Isreal, there wouldn't be an Isreal. And I am sure there are plenty of people who don't have a problem with that, but I do.

Now wait a minute!  I am NOT a good guy!  I have flawed opinions and plenty of other faults.  But, I do try to call 'em as I see 'em.  Now take a look a what I said, I believe America is "partly" to blame and not completely to blame.  My dad always told me that, "When there is a fight, both sides are wrong."  Whether that's really true or not, I'm not sure, but for the most part, I have found that statement to carry more truth than not.

Part of the reason I say that both sides are wrong is that I believe there is plenty of evidence, even from Jewish sources, that Israel has done plenty to beat down Palestinians.  I am not defending the Palestinians use of weapons against Israel.  There is no excuse for that either.

Consider reading Thomas Friedman's Book, "From Beruit to Jerusalem."  I have.  He's a Jew that calls 'em like he sees them and makes some harsh assessments of Israel.  I don't agree with everything he says, but he can't be all wrong. Furthermore, I actually believe we help bring peace when we acknowledge everyone's errors.  I'm not getting all my information from Palestinians.

I do not think America is always wrong.  I agree that Bush has done some great stuff helping with lots of poor countries.  America has done lots of other good stuff too.  I'm not bashing America, but one thing I am questioning the value of what we're getting and supporting with that $15 million a day.  That's a lot of money.  Not asking that question at this point I believe is irresponsible for me as a contributing tax-payer.

Finally, I do support the idea that Israel should be a country.  I am fine with that.  But, the behavior of Israel, or any country for that matter, matters to me whether it's Afghanistan, Mexico, Pakistan or Japan.  I am not saying that American or the UN or anybody should control other countries, but these other countries are engaging in policies and/or practices that have a good chance of impacting America negatively, I sure would like to know about it, and would support responses that help make the world a better place for everyone. 8)

Truth is worth finding and life is too short to work for money.

"The Russians had over 11 million civilian deaths in World War 2, Germany had over 1.5 million and Japan had 580,000. United States had 1,700 and the UK had 67,000. If you look strictly at results it seems that civilians in the "Evil" countries paid a much higher price than the "Good" countries."

I hate to debunk your history, but the Russians were "good" in WWII. They were on the side of the Allies (tho they did agree not to enter WWII at first, much like the USA).

So this kind of blows your theory.

As far as the Russians go I was speaking about the end of WWII when they decided to kill everything in sight and then go on to occupy everything they could get their hands on. Then they decided to start killing their own populaton en mass...

Far as I can tell, that was no theory...
