Yeah, it was definitely fun.  And just on a side note, using the Solo mod to teach the game worked out really well.  It's already built for a one character party so scaling wasn't an issue, and the linear choices made it easier for her while she was learning how to play.

If anyone finds themselves in the position of teaching D&D to a new player one on one, I would say definitely give this route a try.

I don't think that's a noob question at all, a pretty good one imho. It would also be a fairly advanced project for someone to undertake.

If you are concerned with only B/X items that were after Holmes Basic but before Mentzer's Editions it would be a matter of looking up the dates for all TSR products and putting them into order.

Two caveats though -

One - be aware that an earlier item may have been updated in a later printing slightly to conform with the newer rule set (a Holmes item that converted to Moldvay in a later printing)

Two - Something later may have been written more in line with Moldvay's Editions even though it was released during the time of Mentzer's Editions. There were definitely transitional releases between Editions, so having an odd duck here or there would not surprise me at all.

I would think its probably not already done here, but I don't know that for certain. Maybe the guy that wrote the B/X Companion or someone else has already done the work on your query and has it Posted on their Site or Page somewhere.

Good luck though - you should do your own individual Post here on that if you do get a list together - would be interesting to check out.

I would be interested in what you find. In the past, I have looked at OD&D & Holmes basic in similar terms. D&D players at the time probably mixed & matched publications instead of sticking to one edition, but isolating the editions shows how TSR may have intended them to be used, or who the target market might have been.

Serious Dad-of-the-Year points.  My buddy who has 3 little girls (ages 4 [twins] and 1 year old) started the twins out with verbal play.  He just makes up a story and and gives the girls options on what to do.  They both have developed likes for certain classes: one likes being a thief and the other a magic-user.  Their transition to dice and a character sheet will be an easy one for them.

I started this way with my older son. Vehicular D&D: He had a character sheet and the Player's Handbook, I kept a little notepad on the divider. I taught him a dice-rolling system I created. IF he had to roll a d20, I would write down a number from 0 to 19. He would call out a number, and I'd add my number to it. That would be his roll. So, if he called a 12 and mine was 7, he got a 19. If he called an 8 and mine was 18, he rolled a 6. He did the same for my rolls. It worked out great.

BUT---Ron Howard came in to save the production of the "Solo" movie, so he might have worked his last-minute replacement magic, after all? We'll see.

Maybe Ron Howard will play "Jimm Doshun, The Starkiller Kid."
