I was the seller on this one and I was very unhappy to part with this one.  My personal grading goes from Poor, Acceptable, Good, Very Good, Near Mint, Mint.  This is well within the Good range - I've seen many worse ones and this one is a pretty sweet one- I bought it for my personal collection(which is getting smaller by the day), but a $2,000 car repair came at a bad time :(. I purposefully grade very lightly because it is such a subjective thing- I prefer to lead with pics and details rather than pin a specific grade on something.

I don't really follow the pricing on Acaeum when I price most of the rare or mint stuff, since I find it to be incorrect fairly often for these particular items, much to the dismay of most members (I am not saying that what is offered here or the opinions that you guys have are invalid- I just mean I think that some of the pricing is not in tune to the market at this time).  I post the auctions with as much information and as many pictures as I can, detailing every aspect that may be important to a collector.  Then I set a price I think is fair based on my research and let the bidders decide.

You guys really like to argue about things that I just leave in the hands of the bidders- if its too high, then I don't sell it, if its too low, it gets snatched up with the BIN in an hour. The market will tell me what its worth and as someone who prefers to make a profit, I have to trust the bidders will know what they want.

I think any argument against pricing, unless its fraud or a scam or so out of line it hits the most ridiculous price thread, is a useless waste of time when you are talking about the free market.  Providing information, guidelines and opinions are great, and much needed, but to denigrate sellers or call buyers uninformed is highly irresponsible. Disagree, but then eat crow when the free market proves you wrong :)

I have had hundreds of transactions over the past 3-4 years on ebay, amazon, FB with a lot of buyers, (many with you guys too) and have never had a complaint about what someone has purchased, with the exception of something that was missing from a shrinkwrapped Silver anniversary box set!!  You guys wouldn't have even been able to discuss this particular auction in detail if I hadn't been so thorough with my pics and description!

I think that this buyer got a great deal on an item that is extremely rare and in good shape, and which I would have preferred to keep myself :)

Some valid points raised here.  Grading is subjective, an item is only as valuable as what a buyer will pay for it, The Acaeum's valuations may be "light" in some areas.  It will be interesting to see what the 2nd print brown box goes for in November at the Gamehole Con collector's auction.  :?

Sorry but i feel that it is not correct. Grading is more objective than what we discuss: the definitions are pretty complete and a detached cover is a detached cover. What is subjective is the valuation a buyer does. If i really want smtg then i pay far away from the current practiced prices. It happens on ebay,  it is what is called here a biddibg war and often the seller is happy to be a victim of such a war. Having said so, if you find two bidders which raises a price out of any reasonable range then the seller should be happy. I do not find polite that any "outlayer" is a good topic to destroy the work which is done here.
For the sake of completeness i wss not sarcastic in my previous replies: as i wrote i am happy if a seller finds himself in bidding war,  i wish i find myself in one (as a seller) in the future.

I agree with this completely.  Also, I try to think of the Acaeum's "value" list as a point of reference for what the collecting community feels is the center of the item value's bell curve.  As any collector would point out - there are always outliers on the cheap and expensive sides (driven by demand and a pinch of chance) - as buyers/sellers ...sometimes we get lucky and sometimes we don't.

I wish there was a PSA/DNA for RPG stuff  8O

I agree that the Acaeum is the gold standard for value/grading, but there is no way to standardize it to a point where personal opinion is removed from the process. If you send a baseball card in to PSA and you get back a 9 - that's objective- you can be unhappy, but a 9 is a 9. When you buy a 9 you know what grade you are getting- personal opinion is removed. The market recognizes that grade.  What I feel is light staining may be heavy staining to another, so without that definitive grading standard established its hard to tell someone that they are wrong about their opinion on staining.

Good debate- I appreciate the opinions offered up here- makes the hobby fun

Agreed :-).  Like you said, it would be incredibly useful (and beneficial) to have a universally recognized grading system for RPGs (akin to the CGC for comic book collectors).

What would it take for a group from here to start something like that? I think it would be incredibly helpful.

The Acaeum has its grading standards available on this web-site:

Grading

However, getting everyone, or even lots of people, to agree to these standards is another issue entirely.... :?

This one is overseas and has been listed a while now but I haven't seen it show up on this site. With all the interest in wood grain boxes lately, I thought someone might be interested. VERY used.  :D

The problem Chris is that the grading system is not very good. I don't know who decided on it (you don't vote for Kings! Well how did you become King then?), I'm not trying to belittle the efforts of those that did, but I think the grades are basically one off all the way down the line. Items described as near mint by the Acaeum, I see as Very Fine. Items described as Very Fine by the Acaeum, I see as Fine etc.

But a second problem (that I've written about before) is that we have one standard too many. We should have Poor, Fair, Good, VG, Excellent, Near Mint and Mint. Removing the poor items (which should probably be burned in any event) and Mint items means that there is a one to five scale. Much easier to decide on a value that way. One can start with a 3 (or VG) and move to the left or right. Right now we have effectively a one through six scale. There is no mid-point. We really should start over, but I am largely done tilting at windmills. I threw in the towel a few years ago and started using the Acaeum scale and have graded about 3000 of my 10,611 items using it.

As an aside, I have found that the only people who are regular sellers, and whose grades are accurate 95% of the time, are the Burntwire Brothers. I know that if they list something as near mint, that it is actually near mint. Almost everybody overrates their items; it's the reason I didn't buy anything on ebay until 2004. I bought (as many of you know) many rare items at the Gencon auctions over the years. There I could get a close look at the things. But finally there were simply too many ultra-rare/unique things being offered up that I had to bite the bullet and buy things without being able to see (and smell) things myself.

I am also someone who does not agree with the Acaeum standards.  Personally, I like the comic book standard of grading, and it is also more strict that the Acaeum standard.  It is a well-established standard used by reputable professionals.  Unfortunately, few reputable professionals sell on eBay or even at many FLGS.  Like many others, I have thrown in the towel on strict grading and try to primarily describe things accurately and provide clear pictures. :?

The problem with comic book grading is that it works for things like modules and splat books, but there is a completely separate standard for hardcover books. I think the Acaeum standards fill the "middle road" nicely.

I have used The Acaeum grading standards for a decade now, and have sold hundreds (easily over 1000) of items using it. Personally, I put a + or - scale on them, and attach a possible range to overlap what an honest grade would be. So, a VF- / FN+ item that isn't quite VF but better than FN. I've never, not once, had someone question my grading on an item, and I'd like to think I have a reputation as a harsh grader. That's good! That's the rep I want.

Stratochamp hasn't bought much from me, otherwise he'd know my grading eye rolls nothing but nat 20s. :) I'll forgive you this time.

Jason is a great seller.  Very smooth transaction, item was packaged properly and shipped lightening fast.  My transaction with him was top notch and I will be a customer of his again.

Thanks again Jason!  :D

Is there any fellow who had any experience with this seller?
