Someone please explain to me why these tiles are so expensive, when I can pay $12.00 for a roll-out mat (wet erase), or purchase the new 4.0 tile booklets (dry erase)?????

I understand the concept of the tiles, and the things seem interesting, but what happens when a group descends to the lower level, discovers they don't have the key to the "big iron door" and has to go back upstairs to see what they missed?  You've got lots of drawing and redrawing which could be a pain.

I personally solved the problem of mapping by using butcher paper.  I'd draw out my maps on several sheets and it moved the game along so much faster and easier.  It's not as small and/or portable as the tiles, but it costs pennies and it's not heavy at all.  If you have a map tube, great, but it folds easy enough.  It also doesn't matter if players spill coffee on it or whatever.  It just adds to the real-life difficulty of mapping and using a map while exploring.

For example, when I ran Ravenloft, I created a huge map of the castle as I thought/reasoned it existed when first built (and before Strahd added all the traps and blocked certain areas). The map is drawn on several pieces of this huge sheet/butcher paper. I placed it in a map tube to keep it preserved.

This map was located in the village church. When the party meets Donovich, the village priest, he believes the party is their own hope and gives the map to the party. The map had been stored in the church library. It's quite dramatic when I physically hand over the tube to the party, and I ask them what they do with it. Of course, my group opened it up immediately and oogled over what was what, and where they were going first, etc... for about fifteen minutes.

The map is put on a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" grid representing a 10' x 10' area so 25mm minis can be used. The scale isn't exact, but it's close enough. Of course, the map wasn't always correct(due to Stahd's renovations), but it was close enough to make mapping unnecessary. Plus, when fights break out, characters can move their pieces to engage enemies and visualize everything in 3D. It makes DMing fun and much easier too.

Of course, it could be reasoned that players aren't going to map out Castle Raveneloft while running and screaming in pitch black darkness, but with these maps already drawn out, it's not like they are really mapping, just carrying a map and referring to it when they are catching their breath and assessing who is left and who is not charmed.

I made the map over twenty years ago, so it's physically quite old now, and I can't wait to DM this adventure again if for no other reason to pull out one of the more authentic-looking props ever made.

It worked so well, I started doing something similar with every adventure I ran. I made maps for Castle Amber and several other adventures. I love maps.  Anyway, using butcher paper takes a fair amount of preparation, but the adventure experience is worth it in my opinion.
