Exactly.

Not to mention that the plastic they made the gelatinous cube mini from is fairly brittle. I've seen two crack slightly while being dis/re-assembled as described above, during play with my local group. Those containers that dice come in work just as well (though are even more brittle), and come free with something else you need to play anyway

Very good point. The cube is/was almost the same size as the box, so all you had to do was squeeze slightly and you would know exactly if it was inside. That is how I acquired my two DDM Gelatinous Cubes. I walked into my FLGS and squeezed a few boxes and the Gelatinous Cubes made themselves known. The funny thing about all of this is that I really don't like the DDM Gelatinous Cube mini. I much prefer my resin Gelatinous Cubes I purchased from Otherworld Miniatures.

I tend to disagree with you regarding their availability to consumers. My FLGS has always been very good about not opening/weighing/cherry picking DDM boosters, so I've always known I have a decent shot at getting certain minis as long as I could select from boosters that were just pulled from a sealed case.

My DM got the three or four he has online. No cherry-picking on Amazon. And I imagine my FLGS owner would look askance at people squeezing packs and putting them back on the shelf. Hell, he's so paranoid that he thinks you're trying to shoplift if you carry something you want to purchase around the store while you shop for other stuff :roll:

I imagine this was/is quite a common thing at the chain bookstores that carry DDM, though.

I still maintain that even if they sell for $50, you'd have to be a moron to pay it.

I think you just made my point for me. Even if the FLGS didn't weigh the boosters.... a customer who collected or even resold managed to get to the boosters right away and cherry pick them. The average consumer had no real chance to pull a gel cube, tiamat, etc.

I am sure there were FLGS owners who managed to prevent it somehow... but I am not sure why it would be in their interest. The customers who came in and consistently bought 4 or 5 boosters were good for business as long as the others remained in the dark about the distribution potential. Clearly, most people had no idea some people could Id many of the rares by weight....

I actually consider myself an average consumer. I did not walk into stores with a portable scale, nor did I compare every booster the stores had out. I learned pretty quickly that buying loose boosters was a waste of money, and began buying sealed cases at deeply discounted prices and individual minis. The Gelatinous Cube was kind of unique in that it was so easy to identify. As far as I know, distribution of the Gelatinous Cube was the same as any other large rare mini in the Desert of Desolation set.

Oddly enough, a salesperson at my FLGS told me about squeezing the box, as I had no idea it could be done. I could have continued to buy up boosters containing Gelatinous Cubes, but chose not to. I was happy with the two I did pull as they completed my sets.

I bought one off eBay a while back for $30-but at the time I was running a 3.5 campaign where there was a sunken 10x10 room that was filled with said GC.
The party's thief failed his spot check and descended the ladder right into the cube-that I whipped out at that moment.

then in a very smaller font

except UNEARTHED ARCANA - has some loose pages

The MM doesn't look in that good of shape either. The PHB is I guess the nicest looking of the lot, but at around $40 per book (incl shipping), you've got to be kidding yourself

YOU WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME IMPROVING ON THEM
