just wanted to say, that one of the highlights of my GenCon visit, was actually meeting up with you and frank. really enjoyed the company and i was overjoyed at getting one badge, never mind two!! woohooo! amazing stuff!

was great fun listening to you two doing the rares auctions and was hilarious listening to you describing the condition of some items.

i enjoyed it so much that i HAVE to go again next year. it just wouldnt be right otherwise. so gotta get australia out the way in november and then i will save as much as i can!

thankyou for helping make my visit a great thing to always treasure!

Frank and Tim just did a superb job at the auction. It was worth sitting there just to watch them do their thing. Their stories about the items were most often informative and entertaining as heck.

i agree! it would be worth going again just to get to listen to it all over again (as well as bid on shitloads of stuff and have a blast with the acaeum guys again)

Well I'll be damned... elitist? Wow that hurts. I always felt that I was the opposite.

Yeah, I have an education; perhaps too much of one: AA, BS & MEd. I read voraciously and have been known to use big or uncommon words. But elitist?

I always thought I was pretty accessible. Coming back last year and learning that people remembered my name was very gratifing and touching; the ovations and applause were rather embarassing, tho'.

The fact that I have been asked to sign so many things and have my picture taken with someone so often still never ceases to amaze me. I certainly don't think that I have behaved in such a way as to be chided for acting better than I am; I'm just an old hippie Nam vet that happened to have the good fortune to catch an incredible cultural and social wave. Now I'm a happily married husband for 37 years, school teacher, father of two great kids and grandpa to four equally great kids, two of whom I am doing my best to turn into gamers. I have aspirations of being an auctioneer at GC for as many years to come as they will have me.

If I ever do become an elitist, I hope Frank or Tom will slap me silly.

I really do wish I could have made it this year, but it was logistically impossible, due to the new job and other crap. Sounds like everyone from here who went had a great time, which is all that matters.

If you hit a Rowsdower, you get to keep it.

There are times after reading some of these threads that I feel I have just stepped through the looking glass and am having a cup of tea with someone who looks remarkably like Tom Petty wearing a very large hat. This is one of those times.

Now lets look at the word elitism:

The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

1. Superior intellect - Proper roleplaying requires the use of ones intellect. So it would make sense that most gamers are at least percieved to be intelligent.

2. Social status - hmmm ... most gamers are considered to be geeks. As we all know geeks are not exactly on the top of the social calendar. As evidence of this I refer to the recent photo of the guy sleeping in a chair at gencon.

3. Financial resources - Given that most of us are continually broke because we buy expensive pieces of old paper I would suggest our financial resouces are limited.

In summary that makes 1 out of 3. So we ALL fail the elitism test.

Tim:

One thing I did not get to read on Dragonsfoot was your experiences as editor of Adventure Gaming.

I have several issues in my collection...and they are all pretty good.

(Although...after reading about Dave Arneson I was forced to go through them with a red pen, finding things to circle. :wink:

)

Editing an independent game magazine must have been a rough ride with some interesting stories.....?

2. social status - dont have one - going to GenCOn was the first social thing i did since christmas or the marathon des sables in march

3. financial resources - dont have any. i spend it all before i have the chance to have a resource of anything

so i defo dont count
